More Recent Football News On Oct. 26, we played our second | game with Statesvill. his time the contest was played at Statesville. During the first half neither side half Statesville lith Grade made scored, but in the last made 13 points. Several giris were on hand and them- selves heard by their cheering. Our next battle was fought at Landis. Result: Landis 19, Barium 0. Last Saturday the same two teams met at Kuaanapolis. This time the score was 26 to 0. We _ enjoyed playing with these fellows very much, as thev are fine fellows and conducted themselves ina Vke sportsman man- ner. We are arranging with “Uncle Samuel” to carry this pa- per to you without a sub- scription and we are going to send this to you until you write us to stop. This seems like an expensive proposi- tion, but we believe that your interest will be quick- ened to such an extent by getting at first hand, news of this wonderful famil of yours, that your con- tributions will increase in frequency and size more than the cost of getting out the paper many times over and we do not want to wor- ry ourselves and you contin- ually with duns for fifty cent subscriptions. All we want you todo is to read this paper. It is going to be GOOD. WN SUM FaA y *paee eH We had intended sending with our first issue of the Messenger a copy of our annual report, but instead of from this report, possibly all of it. We believe this is a better plan. and it will not be so burdensome as _ giving out both the report and the paper. Copies of the report in booklet form will be sent to any one on request. According to last year’s plan the Every Member canvass should have produced a revenue for the support of the Orphanage between fifty and sixty thousand dollars. “The Thanks- giving campaign and other special gifts should have increased this amount to one hundred thousand to take care of the entire support of the institution and such items of repair and building outside of the special building fund donated by a few individuals. These two sources together only yielded a revenue of sixty-five thousand dollars for last year, which of course accounts for the present deficit of thirty-two thousand dollars. We believe that this slowing up in the revenue has been caused by a majority of the churches allowing their special collec- tions to be credited to the budget. By resolutions offered by the Orphan- age Committee and adopted by Synod, also recommendations by the Steward- large family of girls. that we now plan to publish in the | : | next issue of the Messenger extracts) {ship Committee it is earnestly urged | this year that these special collections | be in addition to the regular benevo- lent quota. While each church is credited with their contributions they should not be credited on their AP- PORTIONMENT. It has been the custom in years past to allow the Sunday following Thanks- giving to be the clean-up Sunday and everybody not reached on Thanksgiv- ing Day was supposed to contribute on this Sunday, which would complete the Thanksgiving offering for the Or- phanage. This year at most of the churches the special collection for the equipment fund for Foreign Missions now being intensively pressed by the Assembly’s Stewardship Committee ; will be taken, and we fear if special stress is not put on the Thanksgiving Day collection, that our cause will be overlooked. We believe there is no more worthy cause of our chuich to- day than this cause of the Orphan- age; we believe that there is no cause to which our people more readily re- spond than this cause of the Orphan- age; but, with all that, unless we all realize the necessity of giving this our serious consideration at this time, how- ever good our intentions may be, the cause of the Orphans will suffer to an extent that we do not realize. and leads and labor saving rules and slugs, and all those things that don’t act like their names. An imposing stone that does net look imposing a bit, of wooden furniture all neatly arranged ix a box, that wouldn’t doto housekeep with and the darling of the office, that is called the “devil” just like that, before prea- chers and all. leys that don’t float sticks, Since all that, we have begun to take off our hats every time an editor passes us, and gaze in awe, as long as one Jast glimpse can be had of the giant intellect and mechauical genius, that it takes to get out a paper. We have heard that every time a person over thirty five learns a new thing he has to forget some thing. If that is true, we will ere long if we keep-on publishing this Paper,be down to where we will have to write” on our cuff the names of our immedi- ate family. And now, what is going to become of this paper the product of so much la- bor labor, southern, power, etc. It is unthinkable that any one who can get a copy, even by borrowing unto the third or fourth passing round can let any of theses golden thoughts @ass unread. “It is unthinkable that as long as families have their hordes of cherished treasures that these sheets shall ever be doomed to kindle the kitchen fires. You know this paper may not look any better than lots of others, maybe not so good, but it really is good be- cause we did it ourselves right here, and we have already noticed that about mental stress, possisly it ourselves. If you have read this far you may have noticed it too,so keep right on, it gets better the further it goes, we mean of course the further in it you read. If any article seems too long, don't get bored, remember the paper is just so big, and if the article you are reading wasn’t there soniething else would have to be, so you might just as well read what is there. We do hope you will like it, and if you find that you don’t write us what is the matter with us, it may be you have discovered it, and anyway it will be that much copy for the next issue. There are lots of things in this world that are worse than a good natured fight, and if our paper is published from montn to month and never receives a rife of criticism, we will reluctantly come to the conclusiou that nobody is reading it. We weicome letters of approbation, criticism or suggestion, not only in the conduct of the paper but as to the conduct of the Institution. Letters of this kind will all be read, a great many will be published in the columns of the paper. We would like for letters of this kind to be addressed to the “Editor” and they will reach the proper desk for consideration. lf i a v¥ ( o } : 1 re i He t Winste pla I I ning } 1} their eq rt \ ; e ¢ itt T SO il : he rate a - : x > j i : pm I U M i\ 0 ‘] § ly .
