Glenn Barkley,Property Committee, stated the need for better parking facilities, and Pastor Ridenhour asked that this be taken up in the Committee, for some specific recommendations, Byron Miller,Evangelism Committee, reported that he was not satisfied with attendance at the monthly visitation meetings. He reported further that his committee was going to put into effect a plan to have attendance of members checked by various people, for a three month period, with follow ups of notes, bulletins, telephone calls and visits to absentees, and specifically one visit to each assigned person during the quarter, and re-assignments to be made quarterly. Maven Warren,Social Ministry Committee, announced that a film, entitled,"What Has Happened to Hannah?"would be shown on Sunday,March 15th,at the regular Sunday School hour. Pastor Ridenhour also requested that the Secretary re- cord the letter of February Sth,1964,from the Council to Mr.G,. Harold Johnson, into the Minutes of the Church. It was also brought out that in line with the new pro- gram put into effect by the Evangelism Committee, whereby bulletins were being sent to absent members of the congregation,a shortage of bulletins existed, and during the discussion,Randa Warren suggested that the choirs, both adult and junior,be given bulletins run off on plain paper, and the Council accepted this recommendation, Mrs.Pope requested permission to have a Jewish speaker Mr.Ludwig,to speak to the young people on Jewish customs, and after some discussion, this matter was left in abeyance, Adjournment followed. Sot}P ,hy ic -;25th,followed by an ice-cream supper and a hymn sing, Final item of business was that which was continued from the previous Council meeting, dealing with some form or order that would apply to marriage plans of members of the congregation.Pastor Rid- enhour had previously prepared a statement regarding proper procedure as he felt it should be,and had given council members a copy of this prior to the meeting. This statement was read item by item, discussed, and motion made to accept it as the policy of St.Paul's Church,to be adherred to for future use. This motion was made by Mr.Byron Miller, and the motion made the reservation that the council adopt it,and place it before the congregation,so that they will be informed explicitly on this action of the council, and noting further that a quorum of five members of the congregation could call a congregational meeting to oppose this act,if they so desired,The motion was seconded by Hunter Stevenson, and in the discussion following was amended to read that a copy of this policy be placed in the hands of each member, The motion,in its amended form was carefully read by the Pastor, and upon vote, was carried unanimously. The purpose of the meeting was to appoint an official pulpit committee for the express task of investigating various ministers that might be interested in coming to St.Paul's to fill the forth- coming vacancy in our pulpit. This committee was formally elected, as follows: Walter Gibson,Chairman Maven \’arren Ronnie Karriker Sam Troutman Glenn Barkley Mr.Gibson was asked to get in touch with Dr,Whitecar for advice. Under the instruction of Mr.Miller, several members were directed to sit in on services of prospective pastors, but complete reports were not in at the time of the meeting. Names submitted for investigation were Rev.Tom Sublett of Hickory;Rev.Harbison of Taylorsville (His name was deleted from the list);Rev.Paul Conrad of Kinston, and the following names sub- mitted to the Council by Dr.R.A.Goodman,including,Rev.Conrad, Rev.J.Lackey,Rev.Trexler of Mooresville,Rev.Troutman of Boone, and Rev.R.Troutman,of Troutman. At this meeting Rev.Ridenhour directed the Christian Educa- tion Committee Chairman to have her committee discuss the appointing of Sunday School officers, including Superintendent, and Assistant Supt.and Secretary. This was to be held in abeyance until the next Council meeting. Adjournment followed, Respectfully submitted, a,Cher Dees Mrs.Cleo Pope,Acting Secretary ae AUGUST 23rd,1964 There was a called meeting of the council on August 25rd, 1964,with the following members present:Byron Miller,Vice-Presi- dent, and presiding,Walter Gibson,Troy Hoover,R.V.Fox,Glenn Barkley,Ray Warren,Sam Troutman, and Elizabeth Fox. The purpose of the meeting, announced by Mr.Miller, was to hear reports from the Pulpit Committee, and those previously sent out to hear various ministers. Mr.Barkley reported on behalf of himself and Mr.Troutman, who had approached Rev.M.Thomas Sublett,Pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church,Hickory,N.C.The visit was unfruitful in light of the fact that Rev.Sublett has a call to the S.C.Synod under con- sideration, and was definitely not interested in the vacancy at St, Paul'‘s. Ronnie Karriker, elected member of the Pulpit Committee,re- ported definite interest on the part of Rev.Paul Conrad of Prince of Peace Church,at Kinston,in making a change.Following this announce- ment questions were asked of Mr.Karriker regarding Rev.Conrad's ability.Details discussed included, among others,Rev.Conrad's limitations,if any, because of physical handicap, appeal to young people, his wife and children, and remarks comparing his financial status.Because Rev.Conrad had formerly served Mr.Karriker's home church,he was in a position to give enlightening remarks, and as a matter of record, the members present at this meeting, and represent- ing a quorum of council members, discussed at great length the pros and cons of issuing a call to a man with a handicap, the members of council doubtless being concerned, and feeling deep responsibility to the congregation because of Rev.Paul Kinney's inadequacies at the time of his pastorate.Mr.Karriker pointed out the only known diff- erence in the type of service carried out is a very unique way of administering communion, Mr.Gibson,Pulpit Comm,Chairman, asked that his committee be excused for deliberation, and after due time, recalled the other council members, and announced a decision to wait until after a Tuesday, August 25th appointment with Dr.Whittecar to express themselves re- garding an actual call to Rev.Conrad. The meeting then adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Paul L.Fox Mrs. AUGUST 26th,1964 This meeting was called by Vice-President Miller to hear results of the meeting of the Pulpit Committee with Dr.Whittecar on Tuesday evening,August 25th,1964.Present council members did not compose a quorum, but included Troy Hoover,Ray Warren,Glenn Barkley,Walter Gibson,R.V.Fox,Elizabeth Fox,and Mr.Miller. Since this called meeting followed choir practice,andbeganat8:30,Mr.Miller called on Chairman Gibson directly for his report. Mr.Gibson advised that Dr,Whittecar presented them with correct rules and regulations on procedure for calling a pastor.Henotedthattherewere20churchesintheSynodwithoutpastors,and competition was keen.He instructed that under no circumstancesshouldanewpastorbecalleduntilRev.Ridenhour has gone, and which advice was not well received by council members, since our constitution requires that a 60 day notice be given to effect the resignation of our pastor, the council felt that the same length of time would probably apply to any pastor we might call, and would in- volve a period of time without a regular pastor. However, the coun- cil heard the advice of Dr.Whittecar, through Chairman Gibson, that this matter should be dealt with slowly, not in haste, and that we should give adequate time and consideration to any pastor that we might call. However,he noted that, after being advised of the visit to Rev.Conrad,in his opinion,Rev.Conrad would be a good man for St.Paul's,stating further that he felt he would fit in well with the program of the church.Mr.Gibson noted that the two prospective names submitted to his committee by Dr.Whittecar before Dr.Whittecar had been advised of the interest in Rev.Conrad, was indeed that of Rev.Conrad, and also Rev.Lester Ruff,of Sanford,N.C.He stated that we might like to hear Rev.Ruff, and perhaps might find him more favorable thanRev.Conrad.He noted that Rev.Ruff had been sent to the Sanford congregation following his ordination, and had served there a period of eight years, and he felt that a change might be in order. However,he spoke of a distinct difference in the two men under consideration,in the way they handle their work.In summation,Dr. Whittecar':advice was to move slowly, and be sure we select the man we want, and wien a selection is made to woo him as a man courts his girl. Mr.Gibson's report was followed by a lengthy discussion on the part of members present, and since a quorum was lacking, only sugges- tions could be made, and these were,in effect,to have members of the congregation and Pulpit Committee go to hear any prospects, and especial- ly the two under consideration,It was also recommended that no call be extended to a man suffering a handicap, without first having the con- gregation hear him,and evaluate the situation for themselves. The matter of salary was also discussed, together with any other benefits offered to a pastor. Since no proper action could be taken by the group, the meet- ing adjourned, Respectfully submitted, Mrs.Paul L.Fox SEPTEMBER 13th,1964 :The council was called for a brief session following Sunday School, and the following matters discussed: 1.Pastor Ridenhour announced that expenses for Rev.Sox would run about $10.00,and suggested that offerings in excess of the $60.00 honorarium and expenses be given to the Lutheran Homes for the Aged,Motion made and carried,se=>2.Pastor Ridenhour read a letter of complete resignation from Mr.Bob Miller,of all his official duties in the church, namely, Vice-President and member of Council;adult Sunday School teacher, and Chairman of the Evangelism Committee. No action whatsoever was taken on this because of inadequate time, and therefore is continued on the Minutes for further action. |3.The third item was a computation of cash receipts and pledges on the Parsonage Fund Drive. Respectfully submitted, Paul L.Fox Mrs. SEPTEMBER 20th,1964 This meeting was conducted by Pastor Ridenhour, who opened the same with prayer, and a reading from the Book of Revelation,3rd Chapter,Meswes—t=+4>—-Following this reading,he lashed out at the council, comparing us with the church at Sardis, and stating that we were too luke-warm;too complacent;too content to sit back and do nothing. He admonished us for the many projects started and left undone, and invit- ed us to look at the minutes to authenticate his statements.tle stressed his great dissapointment in the council for failing to do in one month what it has taken the church several years to match, and that was pledges to completely pay off the parsonage debt. There was no word of rebuttal from any council member present at that time. Minutes were read, beginning with August 2nd,1964,and were approved subject to a correction in Item S,where it reads,"His resigna- tion was submitted due to the fact that he had accepted a call to Organ Evangelical Lutheran Church,Route 3,Salisbury,North Carolina,"correct- ed to read,"His resignation was submitted in order,to accept a call, etc." Further Minutes of August l6th,Sept.3rd,Sese>s7644 all were read and approved.Pastor Ridenhour noted that in the August 26th Minutes, where it was found that with 7 members present,we did not have a quorum, the figure did,in fact, compose a quorum, and that the Old Constitution de- picted that 8 members be present, Treasurer's report was presented and received, Committee re vorts were called for,and Property Committee Chair- man Glenn Barkley reported receipt of an inquiry from Pox-Mullis Ins.Co. as to whether or not we would like to have 4 package type coverage on our Church buildings, which included fire, theft, liability, etc.in one complete pvolicy-ithout a motion, the matter was discussed and it was agreed that this committee,together/ Motion was made that the property committee investigate this proposal, and duly seconded, whereupon an amended motion was made to in- clude Walter Gibson in this matter, because of his adentness in mattes of imsurance. The amendment was seconded and voted on first, both amendment and amended motion carried. Mrs.Cleo Pope's resignation as Education Chairman was announc- ed,because of ill health. She also resigned her teaching job. Next item of business:discussed was the resigntion letter of Mr.Miller.At this time,as Secretary to the Council, and in that capacity, and on strength of facts as set out in my notes of the evening, I would like to record in these minutes that Pastor Ridenhour again bitterly danounced council members for their unwillingness to cooperate and apathy toward the program of the church,in general. He stated that this factor had a strong bearing on Mr.Miller's resignation. He further deplored the fact that it was necessary for Mr.Miller to have a three- fold resignation, setting forth that 3 jobs carrying the responsibility that Mr.Miller's entailed was entirely too much for eny one member, and if others would assume their share of the responsibility, such woul not be the case. There were statements from Sam Troutman,Maven Warren, and Ray Warren that they had talked to Mr.Miller about reconsidering the matter and withdrawing his resignation, but were unsuccessful. On motion of Sam Troutman, whose motion included regret thet Mr.Miller ga=> would not x@#withdraw his resignation, and whose motion furthercitedtheneedtohavesomeoneelseappointed, the Council votedunanimouslytoaccepttheresignation. He suggested that the alternate delegate,Mrs.Lois Knox,go also. There were no further reports from committees, but as the Hospitality Committee Report came up,Pastor Paul revealed some special plans to the council,by way of celebrating St.Paul's 125th Anniversary Year.He stated that the actual anniversary date is May 3rd,but since May 2nd falls on Sunday,he would like to arrange a special one day celebration, with regular service in the morning, but a special celebration in the afternoon, beginning about 4 o'clock, giving ample opportunity for guests, including former pastors,to attend to their own worship services, and yet participate in the celebration.A picnic supper would be planned, as part of the festivities. He also speculated on T.VY.coverage from one of several prospective stations. He also proposed using outdoor advertising via two billboards, which would be furnished through the auspices of Foster Advertising, and approximate cost would entail a $30.00 fee to the artist for 3 to 4 prints to be used on the billboards.Pinally,Pastor Paul expressed a desire on behalf of all of us to do everything within our power to elimi- nate the balance on the parsonage debt now standing, and climax the 125th Anniversary celebration by initiating a building fund on a new church. He announced that we have approximately 3 more monthly "“narsonage fund"offerings before May,and suggested a form of offering that he has used previously with muéh success, called "“ingatherings",wherein the donor takes his o fering himself to the altar, and personally gives it.At some time before the worship service is over, the amount of the “ingathering",which has been counted during the service,is related to the congregation. Pollowing the briefing of ideas by Pastor Paul, some motions were put to the council and vote taken as follows: 1.Motion made, seconded, and carried to designate the Hospi- tality Committee as the 125th Anniversary Committee to make plans, in conjunction with Pastor Paul, for the special celebration. 2.Motion made, seconded, and carried to establish May 2nd as our 125th Anniversary Celebration date. 3.Motion made, seconded, and carried to ap rove some kind of out-door advertising. 4.Motion made, seconded, and carried to designate the up- coming three "parsonage fund"Sundays as "Ingathering Sundays". 5.Motion made, seconded, and carried to designate Wednesday evening offerings during Lent for the parsonage fund. 6.By unanimous consent,it was decided to order special Lenten folders,to fill with dimes,to be distributed to interested members, or,if folders turned in this way previously could be found,to re- distribute them for the same purpose. Mr.Hoover, for Worship &Music Comm.reported a January meeting, and the setting un f acolyte and usher schedules. The Leatherwood Mother and Daughter team of director and organist were also commended on doing a good job. Pastor Paul stated that in line with evangelistic endeavors, the Welcome Wagon service had conSagpes the Coprads, and through the con-es otacthehadmadearrangements“a "ee of the prospective Lutheran families moving into the Statesville area, turned over to him. Joel Miller reported regarding the Common Service Books that we have, and said the Leaguers went through them, and we have 80.Pastor Paul read a letter from World Missions, the gist of which was that 20 or 30 books are needed now in Malaysia. He also read a memo regarding mailing instructions and costs involved in mailing these books. In detail it was set out that a ll 1b.package,con- sisting of 4 or 5 books could be mailed for $1.34.An estimate of the costs for sending 20 to 30 books would run about $10.00.Pastor Paul asked some action from the Council about what they wanted to do with regard to sending these books, and a Motion carried to send 30 books for this purpose. UNDER NEW BUSINESS:Pastor Paul inquired as to what our policy has been regarding interment in St.Paul's Cemetery,In the ensuing discussing, the general consensus was that husband or wife of someone already buried there could also be buried, and since the space is limited, any request for interment of an outsider would of necessity, have to be screened by the Council, Another item brought up was the possibility of appointing a Building Committee, with future expansion in mind, whose beg inning duties would be to go into some of the details involved in a future building program, and some research into some of the problems that would be entailed, such as investigation of the cost of moving our present building back, etc.Pastor Paul asked the Council to be think- ing on this matter, however,no action was taken, Announcement was made that we had School.
