(DME) Date pencilled in at top says Sept. 1951 In Old Iredell: & COUNTY BAPTISTS START AROUND GRASSY KNOB BY: HOMER KEEVER The earliest settlers o° the sovthern two-thirds of Iredell were almost wholly Scotch Irish Presbyterians; above the South Yadkin, except in the section around Snow Creek, the earliest settlers were of every nation under the sun, and it was there that nost o* the non-Prestyter‘an-institutions in the county had their beginning. The first Baptist church in the county, ‘for instance, was Grassy Knob, wh‘ch had its home-comming last Sunday. In fact, Grassy Knob was the first church of any kind to be founded in Iredell county as such. The county was formed in 1788; the next year Grassy Knob was constituted as a church of 65 members. Since before the Revolution, the Baptists had been active in the Forks of the Yadkin country and in Wilkes, and it was from those sections that the impetus for forming the congregation at Grassy Knob came. The ones who led in organizing the church came from a church near what is BROOKS crossroads, but there had been a still earlier congregation on Dutchman's creek to the east of Iredell, formed three years before the Revolution and then disrupted by internal friction; so the Baptists might have followefs in North Iredell long before the institution of Grassy Knob in 1789. The actual founders of the church seem to have been William Petty and William Cook, missionaries working out from FLAT ROCK church, the organization near what is Brooks crossroads. Cook had been pastor of the church on Dutchman's creek, but in the missionary work that resulted in Grassy Knob was a lieutenant to Petty. Actually the most effective work at Grassy Knob seems to have been that of the pastor, Lazarus Whitehead. He was pastor for almost ten years, and left to go back to Davie and reorganize the old Dutchman's creek church as Eaton's. From Eaton's then he organized later, Iredell's second Baptist church at New Hope on Fifth creek. Grassy Knob was named for the small mountain at whose foot the church stood. Although the mountain is today almost entirely wooded, it undoubtedly deserved its name during the days ‘of early settlement. Much of the country in what is now Iredell was grassland when the settlers moved in, and the idea of a grass covered knob at the end of a spur of the Brushes is not so strange. Most of the earliest settlers in the northwest corner of the county seem to have been around the foot of that knob, and it was somewhat the natural center for any social life there. The census of 1790 shows around the foot of the mountain several families that are now there. Wonsley and Obidiah Baker were there; over toward Hunting Creek were Elizabeth Campbell and her son, listed as Penniful in the census. On the Northwest side of the Knob were the Felps family (now Felts), led by John Felps. To the South side was REUBIN FLETCHER, next to him was Charles Matison. Over next to the Felps was a Frenchman, Nimrod Lunsford, and somewhere near him was LUCKEY SPEAKS. JOHN ROBERTS was close to REUBEN FLETCHER, and somewhere in the same section was a MOSES SANDERS, who owned five slaves. Most Prominent of all was SAMUEL WILLIAMS, who bested Sanders by one slave and with Six slaves was the largest slave owner of that whole section. -~2-= History re Grassy Knob Tapt. Further on up Rocky Creek and away from Grassy Knob were the Redmans, led *y Thomas, the JONNSON'S, the Casts, the Jolleys, and John Shoemaker and h‘s sons; wh:1@ to the east o* the Knob were the Balls, George lullis, Samuel Henderson and the Morgans, who lived next to Surry county line of that day. Some of those families to the east were CUAKER'S, part o* a settlement alone the county line there. The Guaker influence is strong there to this day, but most of those families to the west o® the knob are to this day Baptist and show more the influence of the Paptist congresation at Grassy Knob. Origin Unknown Just when those families moved in and where they came from is one o* the haziest parts of Iredell's history. The earliest land grants were made in 1783, but there is every evidence that some o* the families - or mayte most of them - had been living there ‘rom be‘ore the Revolution. There were no land grants made in Iredell from some time be*ore the Revolution until 1780 and very ‘ew were made before 1783. The death of Lord Granville who owned colonial Iredell, and the outbreak of the Revolution slowed up the actual patenting of land, and it was only a*ter Cornwallis had been driven ‘rom the State that the land grants went through. Charles Jolley's land, for instance, was granted “inally in 1783, but he sold some of it to JOHN PELPS in 1775, the year of the outbreak o* the Revolution. One of the oldest settlers in that whole section was Percival, or Pierce, Campbell. His land was granted to Elizabeth Campbell in 1783. Much of the land around Grassy Knob and on up Rockey Creek above it was actually patented by David Woodson, Rowan county surveyor who had an eye for good land and bought it from the State for speculation purposes. To get a fair picture of the movement of fimilies into that section, one needs only to search the deeds sold from Woodson's speculation tracts, which he began entering during the last days of the Revolution, but which he finally secured only about the time of the formation of Iredell county. So close was the Grassy. Knob curch to the corner o* Wilkes county and what was then Surry county that much of its congregation must have lived across in those counties. Names familiar in that section today are found in the 1790 eensus in those other counties, names like Thomas Rash, Claiborne Howard, and several Myars families. All of these drifted on down into Iredell, with Thomas Rash at least, 4+ seems to have been Grassy Knob connections that drew him on down. Puzzling Question Another puzzling question in connection with that section around Grassy Knob ig the relation of its people to the Revolution. Traditionally, the people on up the creeks above the Houston's and the Young's, in northeest Iredell, were Tories, and a lawless element during the troubled days of the Revolution. However, a careful study of family tradition in that section shows no Tory background that has come on down. Other sections of the State where there was 4 Tory backrround have their family traditions, but not Iredell. In fact there is evidence 0% Patriot background. John Shoemaker had two sons at the battle of Eutaw Springs in South Cerolina, and one of them John, Jr., was killed there. re ee History of Grassy Knob Bapt. church Cont'd, Claiborne Howard, at a ripe old are, was one of the “ew Revolutionary pensioners le°t in Iredell. Possibly, the Tories were all ruin out o° the sect'on during the rouch Revolutionary days; maybe the Tory elements simply dic not carry on their traditions. At least Toryism did not bulk larre. Ine‘dently, the same section has never been ashamed of its unionist sentiment during the Civil War. Thus at Grassy Knob was berun the “irst o* the institutions di*ferent from the Presbyterianism of the more southerly sections of Iredell. It wes due larcely to a different people com‘ne in from a different direction, a people with a background more hazy than that of their Scotch-Irish brothers, but ‘rom all the evidence available, not a background which contained a large amount o* Revolutionary Toryism. David Patterson came forward and made his recontation and was received and orders for him to have a letter of dismistion which was done. Dec 7 1816 = Brother lewis was desiered to invite Brother Raker to attend the next meeting in corse. Jan. 11, 1817 - No business. Feb. 15, 1817 - Brother Paker and Brother William Dowel under the disfavor of the church until the next meeting. Mar. 2, 1817 - The brothern came forward and was excluded for the sin of drunkness and Brother Dowell for fiting. Apr. 12, 1817 - Nothing of note. A door was opened by the church for to hear experience Betsey Angel came forward and related what the Lord had done for her soul, and was received in fellowship, Also some brethern from the Cool Springs Church applyed to us for consel in respect of Isham Dickason a member we consider him not a member in fellowship with us, but advise our friend Dickason to apply to the association for counsel. July 11, 1819 - A petition from the members convenient to Lewis Meeting House in ‘Yilkes County for to become a contitution which was granted and that A, Lovelace wrote petitions to three (3) of the sister churches for ministerial. Phelps to attend at Lewis Meeting House on the Saturday before the 4th Sunday in Sept. in order to constitute a church at Lewis Meeting House. Also the church considering that Bro. James Dowel had not covered the meeting house well and thinking that the brother ought not to have full price for it. The church and Mr. Dowel agreed to leave it to three (3) of the brethern to judge what Bro. Dowel ought to have for the work he had done in repairing the meeting house. Aug 7, 1819 - The brethern (to wit) Lovelace, Privitt and Bagwell at request jucged that Bro. Dowel have $20, Church proceeded to chose delegates to go to the Association and we appointed Bro. John Angel, Bro. Henery Sother and Bro. ------ader, and whilst seated Sister Rebeckah Standley came forward and requested a letter which we made. Also we considere that the money that had been paid $11 and 20 pence by the hand of Bro. Dec. 182 = Brother Henery Souther came forward and made known to the church that he had been overtaken in a fault by drinking two much sprituous liquor and acknowledged his sin, the church then restored him in the spirit of ----?, after counseling him to be more careful. Also Bro. Cader Privitt and Sister Polley Privitt laid in a grievious against Bro. Levi Bagwell for erring from the truth, the church took into consideration and laubored with the parties but could not get them reconesiled, and the church thought it advisable to lay it over until the next meeting. Jan. 1821 - Took up the reference of the last meeting and excluded Bro. Bagwell. Feb 10, 1821 - Bro. loveiace came before the church and made known to the brethern that he had commited sin in drinking two much sprit liquor, acknow- ledged his fault, the church counselled him to be more careful for the time to come, and restored him in the sprit of meekiness. Var 10 1821 -— Randelph Becknell came forward to the church and acknowledged that he had sinned by drinking apirituous liquor to an excess and that he did not fault the church in excluding him from their fellowship but he thought he had seen the evil thereof and he hoped the Lord had forgiven him and he hoped the church would as he was désirous to be with them, the church after given him a reproof restored him to their fellowship again. Lovelace to write the letter for them. Also the church being informed by ...? Mat Sifter (?) Shaver had been intoxicated thought it expedient to call on her and enquire to know if it was so and appt. Br. Bussell to let her know it. Also Bro. Angel requested the church to take into consideration the length of time he had attended as their preacher and pastor with them, and to let him know by Apr. meeting in course if they would be willing to give him a letter of dismission and as he is called attend at the Cool Springs meeting house a> the time of our meeting in Mar. he does not expect to be with us but requested us to attend our meeting and consult & géteour minds made up to give him an answer at Apr. meeting. Mar. 9, 1822 = The members mostly failed to appear. Apr. 13, 1822 - Meeting took up the reference in respect to a report against sister Shaver which she denied as groundless, The answer to bro. Angel postponed until meeting in May. Also Er. Lovelace appt to act as deacon and sister Keziah Hayes applyed for a letter of dismission which was granted and the Clerk to prepare the letter, then meeting dismissed. May. 11, 1822 -- Br. Lovelace informed the church that he did not fellowbhip some of the conduct of Pro. Becknell in respect of his breach of trust in braking the jail, the church condemn'd his conduct but his case being distressing at that time he acknowledged was the cause thereof he also acknowledged that he was in fault and was sorry for it. The motion in respect of Pro. Angel request and answer withdraw'd. June 8, 1822 - Nothing of importance came before the church. (11) RECORDS OF GRASSY KNOB BAPTIST CHURCH —— Con't. July 13 1822 - Church met ~ and adjourned. Aug 10 1822 - Church met according to adjourment - and called on Bro. James Dowel in respect of a report in some unbecoming word or conduct he acknowledged his fault which gave satisfaction after being admonished by Bro. Angel. Also Bro. Lovelace came forward and informed the brethern that he had been convicted for drinking spiritous liquors more than was expedient for him to do at. After demonishment to be more careful it was looked over knowing the imperfection of man. The appointed delegates to the Association to wit: Brethern John Angel, Rich'd, Shelley and A. Lovelace to prepare the letter to Association. Also Sister Smith being under censure by some of the members of the church it was discussed and she was acquited. Sept 71822 - All appeared in peace, then appointed Bro. H. Redman and C. Privit as commissoners to observe the meeting house and make a report to the church when it needed repairing. Also the members living convenient to Lewis Meeting House petition the church at Grassy Knob where they belonged to give them up to become a constitution at Lewis's Meeting House in Wilkes County. An answer to be given next meeting then dismissed until meeting in course. Oct 12 18622 - Church met in fellowship and found a charge against Bro. Love- lace for drinking two much on his return from the Association and we suspend him till the next meeting and reference being taken up then. Request we answered and letters to be sent to the several churches. Nov 9 1622 - Reference respecting Arch'd Love.... was teken up and after it being duly concidered the church restored him to fellowship again. Door was opened for experiences and Jessey Shelly came forward and offered his experience and was received. Then Patsy Hix came forward with her experience in order to satisfy the church for her former conduct and she gave satisfaction and a letter was ordered to be wit to the Brier Creek church concerning the matter--— then Bro. Sister Liddea fails to make any thing that appeared rong to appear against Br. Dowell and as she failed to establish hur charge against him, she found in fault of having spoken rong and harsh words brother Benjamin Shelley and on hur recantation and expressing hir sorrow same it was put to the church----as many as could forgive hur and keepe hur in fellowship to make it knowby rising from there seats they all rose or was on there feete except one and she agreed to go elong with the church.
