Robert Charles Nantz,19,son of Fred Nantz,white male,Rt 2,near Kilroy's,Mooresville,N.C.came to his death at 10:15 AM thisdateduetohead,neck,and internal injuries.
Cause of death was motorcycle-auto accident.Young Nantz wasridinganddrivingamotorcyclesouthonU.S.21 when Mrs.NettieBasingerThompson,43,1503 South Main Street,Lexington,N.C.pulledacrosstheroadinpathofmotorcycle.Point of impact was 2 feettorightofcenterline1/2 mile north of Mooresville city limits infrontofJ.L.Plyler home.
Lonnie A.Plyler,326 South Church street,Mooresville stated thathesawthemotorcycleproceedingsouthonN.C.Highway#115 at a fastrateofspeed,heard,collision,but did not see impact.
Mrs.Thompson,driver of 1953 Mercury,CD 5425,had Mrs.OllieBasinger,her mother,in the car with her,and these folks were goingtothePlylerhomeduetoseriousillness,and had been called to come.Mercury was struck to rear of right side door.
Mrs.J.P.Rogers,114 May Drive,teal ed cas stated that the driver°of the Mercury was giving signals to turn left in the Plyler drive,andthattheMotorcyclepulledinStraightsouthinhislane,and that theMercurypulledinfrontofthemotorcycle.Mrs.Rogers was just behindtheMercuryandinfrontofa1952PlymouthdrivenbyMrs.A.C.Holtshouser,Rt 1,Mooresville,which was struck by the motorcycle after the impactwiththeMercury.A measurement of 45 feet from Mercury ‘to Plymouth,andthebodyofthedeceasedwas45feetfrompointofimpacttowherethrown.
Sgt.B.L.Walker,Sheriff J.C.Rumple and the undersigned investigated,and no inquest deemed necessary,because no intent was observed on anyone'spartinvolvedtodothedeceasedharm,and it was decided to allow civilauthoritiestosettlesame.

Report on the death of Mrs.Lillie Preston Neal and gon Charles
Preston Neal,who were killed Christmas December 25th 1936.
The accident occured on highway No.70 about two miles east of
Statesville,the wreck was caused by James Foote,colored,
driving inte the highway from a side road getting into the
traffic lane.
The inquest was not held as it was deemed unneccassry as the
cause was apparent.The bodies of lirs.Neal and her son were
removed from the scene of the wreck and they both died at
Davia Hospital later in the day.Young Mr.Neal died about
twleve Otclock and that afternoon Mrs Deal died about 5 O*’clock
neither regaining consciousness.

Report of the investigation of thedeathofJoeNeelofMooresville,N.C.
Joe Neel,age 14,was killed when he was struckbyatruckdrivenbyaMr.Setzer from Claremont,N.C.Mr.Setzer had been placed under arrest when SheriffMorrisonandmyselfgottoMooresville.
From all reports at the investigation Mr.SetzerandJoeNeelweregoinginthesamedirection.YoungNeelwasonascooteronthehardsurf,ced road and thatMr.Setzer brfed to miss the scooter but failed to do so.An inquest was not held due to the fact that Mr.SetzerwasplacedunderbondandthatahearingwillbeheldonApril@nd.
Thvesthgation was held at the home of Mrs.LattaNeelnearlMooresvilleonTuesdayevening,March 20th.The accident had occured about 4:30 that afternoon.
This the 22nd day of Mardh,1945.

Sheriff J.C.Rumple and the undersigned investigated,and found thebodyupomacouch,the residue of the ingested compound,found a drunkhusbandbythenameofCarl0.Neely,and a little girl about two yearsofage,which we got placed with Mr.&Mrs.Sam Watts,Rt 3,Statesville.
The note is in the files of Sheriff J.C.Rumple,and the surroundingswerepathetic.
No inquest necessary.

good and lawful men,viz F.G.Deaton,W.J.Matheson,T.S.offey,D.W.Speaks,R.L.Peeton,and W.T.Summers,being
by me summoned for the purpose,sted,at Sabdyeet >
being by dyly gworn and Empaneled,at
tomenipAt@atReounty,did hold an inquest over the dead
body of rothy Neill,24,and after inquiring into the
evidence to be precured that Dorothy Neill came to her death
while riding in an automobile driven by George McConnell,
over a dangeroug streach of high-way IScausing him to lose
controllof said automobile.
We recommand that the said George McConnell be exoneratedofallblameinthedeathofBorothyNeill.Signature of thejuryandtheYoronerisattachedhereto.

Essie Davidson Neill,white female,Rt 2,Mooresville,came
to her death at about 4:30 PM this date due to a cerebro vascularaccidentatherhome.She was 69 years of age.
Courtney Cavin called the undersigned from the home,and
stated that the family was present,and everything was in goodorder,that the deceased just dropped dead,and I advised that IwouldcheckherbodyattheFuneralhomethisevening.
No marks were noted upon the body,and no evidence of foulplaynoted.
No inquest necessary,

REFORT OF THE INVESTIGATION OF THE DEATH OF FRANK NEILL
Frank Neill,45,took his own life by putting a load from a 20-guage shot gun into his heart Friday morning at 10 minutes to 8o'clock.Deputy Sherriff,C.R.Bailey,and Sherriff John WwW.Moore were with me on this investigation.We found that he cametohisdeathbygunshotwoundinhisheartandwedeemedanin-quest unnecessary,as i6 was evident that it was done by suicidalintent.

Joe Caldwell Neill,white male,50,134 Mackey Street,Mooresville,N.C.came to his death at 7:30 AM this date @ne toselfinflicted12guageshotgunwoundinareaofsecondrib.
A note "Good By to All,Joe 7:30 AM"was found by Chief ofpoliceLloydShumake,and Worth Goodrum and Chief Shumake madeentrancetothedeceased's room.The deceased was lying flat onhisbackonthebed,a stick 12 inches long under his left hand,the gun,a 12 guage single barrell with barrell against the bed,and the but of the stock of the gun on the floor.
Mr.Roy Troutman reported the incident at 4:00 PM this date,and Sheriff J.C.Rumple and Deputies Marshall Maness and TomThompsoninvestigated,along with the undersigned.
No inquest necessary,and death was self inflicted.

Russell Neils,17,colored male,220 East Bell Street,came to
his death at 6245 PM this date,death being due to severe brain injury
duesto auto wreck,Amity Road,south of Chapel Hill Church at about 4:45
PM this date.|

The 1957 Chevrolet 4 door sedan,owned by Catherine McCollough
Warren,Rt 7,Linwood Drive,driven by George Richard McCollough,
230 East Bell Street,Statesville,17,c/m,who stated that he was
driving about 50 MPH,that his glasses fell off the sunvisor and that
he reached down to pick up same,that his auto turned over 3 or 4 times,
that other occupants in the car were Russell Morrison,17,532 South Elm,
Melvin Howell,17,763 Was hington Street,and Josep}Lindsey,16,241
North Tradd Street.Melvin Howell stated that the auto was travelling
70 MPH that McCollough was driving.
Johnny Barker,school bus driver states that the car was going at least
70 MPH,possibly 75 MPH or better when car going south hit pole,paint on
pole is 12 feet in the air,auto then went out of control;black tire
marks 150 feet,went off left side 262 feet shoulder of road and bank,
started turning 119 feet,then 31 feet into road,throwing all occupants
out of the car.°
George Richard McCollough ordered held for grand jury action.

Charles Arthur Neilson,53,Troutman,N.C.,white male,cametohisdeathat3:00 PM this date due to a heart attack.
The undersigned was called to the home in Troutman,who calledDr.T.R.Griffin,to observe and examine.
The deceased was found in the garage by his neice,and had
apparently been dead for an hour or so.
No evidence of foul play noted,and no inquest necessary.

street.I never noticed the car until the car was within about 10 er 15 feet of the
child.Saw it hit,but couldn't see position it was in when it hit.There were cars
up the street a little from me.
Q.How many children were there on the sidewalk?
A.I didn't notice any on the sidewalk until they started seross the street.
Q.Do youhave an opinionas to the speedofthecar?
A.I eould hardly form an opinion as I didn't notice the car until within 10 or 15 feet.
Q.Was there much traffic or cars parked on the road?
A.There wasn't any on that side where it happemed,There were care parked down
next te the Post Office,down thestrest some.|

front and rear wheels of the car over and over.When she stepped rolling,car's rear
wheel came to child's head befere it stopped.

A.Wo,the boy helping me ran over there and I went in to the telephoneto call an
ambulance and decter Griffin.

A.I don't knew how far after it hit the child.It was about 3/h length ef car

A.When I got downthere I measuredmarke—tiremarks were 20 feet,right rear
tire was feet from side parking marks,Inside measured 154 feet between marks &
ineluding parking space,front 32 feet,side appreximately 10 after impact until
car stopped.

A.Car was on centerline.I measuredroadbythemarks.It was 184 feet in between
the parking.Right tire marked feet from parking marksom east sideof the read

Appreximately 75 feet from intersection.I didn't measure it but about that.

Q.In just your general words,tell about your investigation.
A.I got there,they had already removed the child and lifted it over in Mr.Daniels
yard.Highway Patrolman took measurements and it ead:in my epinion,the 2 kids
were coming wpon East side and started at on eaie temnite went side &frem blood en
the street,it appearedto me that the car was maybe 12 inches or maybe furtheronthe
left lane.left front wheel was 1 te 16 inches over.There were no marks and if
you measure the road it would be about the center,It appeared she applied brakes
when she saw the kids and when she hit the kid she released the brakes and:the carrelled
on maybe10feet after impact.
Q.The children were coming from Service Station?
A.Yes.They were on Service Station side and started to cress at an angle.
Q.Theywere goinginthe direction in angle car was moving?
A.That's right.

Little Thurman turned and went back to his side and when he turned he lost his shoe?

4.Yes.
Had she been driving carefully all day?
Yes,she is a very careful driver.
About what speed was she driving?
I couldn't say,I wasn’t paying particular attention to the speed.
Do you have an opinion as to what speed you were going when you struck the child?
Just an opinion es to the car rolling,it couldn't be going fast to stop that quick.

you did.
A.I was going down the road and,if I remember,at a time like that you can*t remember
everything,there was cars on both sides.If I remember correctly there was a red track
coming toward me.I was trying to keep on my side to keep from hitting the truck.4s I
passed the truck and I didn’t get passed,some kids run out from behind the truck.I
thought that maybe they were running behind the truck for it to stop.I hit something
end heard the child scream.
Q.You were coming up Perth Church road towards the stop light?
A.Yes.
Q.You had been to Asheville and cam back by Lexington and coming up Perth Church road?
A.Yes.
Q.Bid you observe the stop light?
A.Yes,it was changing,at the timaI was thinking I would slow down ween it changed from >
green to red and wouldn't have to make a complete stope
Q.As you were coming up the street,were cars on poth sides?
A.As well as I remember there were cars on both sides.I thought patrolman asked me to
pull up and I thought there were cars on both sides.
Q.Do you have an opinion as to your speed at that time?
A.I don’t know for sure.I wasn't expecting anything to happen and wasn't watching
gpeedometer,but couldn"t have been going too fast.
You didn*t have any criminal intentions of hitting the child?

sign trying to get by the truck and the children?
a.Yes.
Q.Did you see the child before you struck it?
Just an instant before.
Did you raise your foot to apply your brekes?
4.I don’t remember.
Q.You had already been to Asheville,coming down Perth Church road headed North in
direction of the stop sign,you were in your right lane on this road as you approached
the stop sign?
A.Yes.:
Q.As you were approaching,I believe you said you were looking at the stop 1i ght?
A.As I was approaching,I didn't notice it back here.I was trying to keep my mind
on getting between the trucke
Q.Had it changed from green to red?
A.It was green and it changed and I was slowing down so that I wouldn't have to come
to a complete stope

to Cerebral Hemorrhage at bese of brain which caused respiratory
failure due to auto accident at 1:20 AM 21 December 1952.
Said auto accident happened at the Blue Door Cemetery 4 miles
north of Mooresville,N.C.on U.S.#21 highway at 1:20 AM 21 Decem-
ber 1952.State Highway Patrolman R.L.Henry investigated the acci-
dent along with the undersigned.
Gumey Elliot Nelson,Sr.and Gurney Elliot Nelson,Jr.were
the occupants of the 1951 Ford Fordoor sedan involved.Both men
stated to Patrolman Henry at the scene and at Lowrance Hospital
Mooresville,N.C.that the auto belonged to the deceased,that the
deceased Nelson was the driver of the auto at the time of the acci-
dent.Nelson,Sr.was fully conscious when Patrolman Henry lefttheLowranceHospitalat3:00 AM 21 December 1952 and died thirtyminuteslaterasstatedinPara.#1 by Dr.George W.Taylor,M.D.
Nelson,Sr.stated to Patrolman Henry that he was driving 50 MPH on
approach to the 35 degree curve to left headed south on U.S.¢21
and that the car skidded,ran off the road on the right side headedsouth,that the car ran thru the parking place on the right side oftheroad,tumed over 1 and 1/2 times in the field.Both Nelson,
Sr.and Nelson,Jr.stated that Nelson,Sr.was driving.‘They bothstatedthatNeison,Jr.had driven from Columbus,Ohio to Stetesville,N.C.and that Nelson,Sr.took over driving to drive on to Columbia,S.C.to visit relatives during the Christmas Holiday Season.Nelson,
Sr.was thrown from the car and Nelson,Jr.remained in the car while
it was overtuming.
Gumey Elliot Nelson,Sr.w&s a school teacher in Columbus,Ohio.
No appearance of any intoxicants whatsoever were noted or found.No other vehicle was involved.Nelson,Sr.was the owner of the auto.Nelson,Sr.operator's license #was Ohio F 16329,and the vehiclelicense#was Ohio 52 B-13216.Nelson,Sr.had 3&years of driving
experience.
Nelson,Jr.was 19 years of age.
No inquest was deemed necessary.

date on the Vaughn Mill Road near Cool Springs due to an auto wreck.
The deceased was the driver of a 1950 Dodge Coupe,CJ 9214,owned by his father.The auto was out of control for 413 feet,
on a sand-clay road,and completely overturned once.
Other occupants of the Niblock car were Laddie Moore,12HarryLockeMoore,15,and Stephen Benfield,14,all of Route $1,Statesville,who were not injured.
Apparently what happened,young Niblock's head got caughtpeasthedoorandtheautoasitoverturned,killing him in-
stantly.
Sheriff J.C.Rumple and the undersigned investigated,alongwiththeStateHighwayPatrol.
No inquest necessary.

The above injuries were received in an auto accident at
the intersection of N.C.901 and N.C.115 at 3:45 PM this date.
The deceased was a passenger in her son's auto -Mr,W.T.Wichols,66,
Page,Va.Mr.Nichols was the driver of his auto.Mr..Nichols
stated to Dr.J38.Holbrook,M.D.,and Staff Physician of the
Davis Hospital that.he aia not see the intersedtion,that he was
going west on N.C.901,that he overran N.0.115 into the embank-
ment on the wést side of N.C.901.
Injuries to Mr.W.?.Nichols were severe chest injuries and
both kmees broken.Injuries to Mrs.W.T.Nichols,passenger in her
husbands car were both legs and left arm broken;Mre.Nichols was
61 years of age and lives with her husband at Page,Va.Elsie
Wooldridge,12,grandaughter of the Nichols,and also a passenger
in their car received a broken right ankle.
State Highway Patrolman R.1l.Henry investigated scene of
accident along with Dr.J.S.Holbrook,acting Coroner,and found
that the Nichols auto,a 1947.Pontiac coach had overran N.C.115
from N.C.901 and that the impact of the auto struck the west bank
of N.C.115 about 18 inches from the be of the west bank.Ditch
on west side of N.C.115 is about 4 feet deep.Mr.Nichols stated
that hé was driving about 40 MPH.The large Sf0P sign at the inter-
section in the middle of view from N.C.901 was not present and had
been destroyed 4 or 5 days pryor due to a tanker fire.There were—
small stop signs back on N.C.901.
Aftér a review of all the facts present in the death of Mrs.
Ida Nichols,deceased,Sgt.B.-L.Walker and Patrolman RL.Hanry oftheStateHighwayPatrol,Dr.J.@.Holbrook,Acting Coroner,andMarvinRaymer,Coroner,were of the opinion that the deceased came
to her death due to an accident,and that there was no criminalnegligencewhatsoever,and that no inquest was necessary.

In the morgue of Iredell Memorial Hospital 12-22-60 at 9:30 p.m.,we
performed a post mortem examination on Winifred Nichols,a 28 year old
colored female.I am sending you a report of the findings.The autopsy
was done in your presence,with your assistance.
The body was that of a 28 year old,colored female,appearing stated
age,with long,straight,coal black hair.There was a bullet hole.ofentranceinthecenteroftheforeheadbetweentheeyebrows.This’wassmall,probably a 22 caliber hole,with surrounding powder burns and
brusing about the right eye.The nose,mouth,and throat were filled
with blood.No wound of exit or other trauma was found about thehead.AP and lateral x-rays of the skull refealed marked fragmentation

On the right shoulder,anteriorly,there was a bullet wound of eitivence,
small caliber,with surrounding powder burns,directed from the right
side,anteriorly,entering the chest by fracturing the fourth rib.Itwentthroughthelowerlobeoftherightlung,crossing the midline,
going downward through the diaphragm.It was found lodged in the left
kidney.
Examination of the back revealed two onal caliber bullet wounds of
entrance,one in the right side,mid scapular line,at level of 9th.
interspace.This was found to traverse the right lower lung lobe and
pigrce the costochondral junction anteriorly and lodged in skin torightofxiphoid.
The other wound,of the same nature,was found slightly to the left
of the vertebral column at the level of the 7th interspace..Thiswentthroughtheaorta,right ventricle and lodged in the lower third
of the sternum.The pericardium and both sides of the chest were filldd
with blood.The only other evidence of struggle were small insignificant
eee of the right elbow,right knee and shin,and dorsum of rightoot.:
Bxamination of the stomach revealed a moderate amount of well macerated
material,the particles of which could not be identified.This probably
sopeee ae that the material had been ingested probably several hours
before death.
Examination of the vagina revealed no evidence of spermatazoa.

The deceased child was found on its back by LawsonandMaryJaneNicholsat5:00 AM 29 October 1951,and deadwhenexaminedbytheparents.
Lawson Nichols notified Deputy Sheriff James TomlinwhocalledSheriffCharlieRumpleandtheundersignedCaroner.
Sheriff Charlie Rumple,Deputy James Tomlin,and theundersignedinvestigatedattheNicholshomethesurronmndings,the body of the deceased,and questioned the parents,and |found no marks of foul play.:

Mr.R.E.Christopher,10 Birch Street,Asheville,N.C.andMreW.J.Brooks,R.F.D.3,Asheville,N.C.were witnesses also;These men.were engineer and fireman respectivaly.Both statedthattheysawMr.Orren driving north on dirt road to left of RYheadedsouth,and that their train was travelling south on RYtracksat35MPH.Both men stated that emergency brakes wereapplied40feetpriortocrash,and that the whistle was blowingandthebellwasringingfullblast,and that Mr.Orren kept oncomingapparentlylookingstraightforwardattrain,and that Mr.Orren turned left directly inte front of train,and that thetrainstrucktheoff-driver side to Mr.Orren's auto.frain #4134 travelled 833 feet prior to complete hault.Right portionofenginestrucktheOrrenaute.Engine was inspected 15 Decen-ber and ee inspection notice in cab of engine stated generalgoodconditionthroughout.
fhe Orren auto was Imocked 90 feet south of crossing,andMr.Orren was not thrown from his auéé.Mr.Orren was steatthemouthandslightpulsewhentheundersignedarrived withanambulance,and Mr.Orren was removed to the H.-F.Lo Hospital.Mr.Orren was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital by Dr.Paul Me Deaton.No other marks were noted except crushed rightchestbyDr.Deaton and the undersigned.

It is the opinion of the undersigned that Mr.Orren was inhisusualhealthpriortoaccidentduetohisturningtoleftattheHilderbrandCrossing,because should he have been gravely illpriortoaccident,his auto would have gone straight north.RYWarningsignsofRYcrossingaresouthofMr.Charlie Hartline'shomewhichisapproximately350feetpriortoRYcrossing.

and forced Dent Ostwalt into the corner of the garage,and that Dent
had no place to go,and that Ben told Dent that he was going to kill
him,that Dent was working on.some of the fellows jointly owed mache
inery when Ben came to the garage.
Dent Ostwalt testified "I was back there as he came in the door,
and he said:Stop where you are,you S.0.B.,I'm going to kill you.
Js he came toward me with the iron bar,I.knew he meant what he said,
so I picked up the first thing I got my hands on.In my own heart,
I didn't mean to kill him.I didn't know why he was going to kill
me,he didn't say.I've always been scared of him.I had no where
to go when he came at me.I was in the corner.

4:10 AM this date at Davis Hospital due to chest wound,12 guage,
self inflicted on 7/24/59.
The deceased shot herself with a 12 guage,single
shot shotgun in the pasture about 300 yards from the home,was removed
to the hospital,and died 3 days later.
-ghe had been in ill health for several weeks,and
the undersigned picked up the deceased in an ambulance at the scene of
the shooting,saw the angle of the gun,the stick that same was fired
with,saw the struggle of the deceased prior to time being found byMr.
Hal é1ark,a neighbor.The deceased's brother -Everette Ostwalt,
was at the scene upon my arrival,and rode to the hospital in the
ambulance.

The deceased had taken a shovel to open some ditch or terraceends,and did not come home for supper,thus the alarm was spread forthesearchofhim.The deceased was found at about 7:30 PM this date.
The personal effects were given to his son,and his childrenandwifeobservedtheconditioninwhichhewasfound.
No evidence of foul play noted.

were instantly killed in an airplane crash at 6:00 Pa this dateonCarlWigginsfarmabout5milesnortheastofMooresville,N.C.Both men were severely mangled,and death was due to accident.
Hareld Miller,and co-owner of Miller airport near Mooresville,ami James W.Lowrance,Mooresville,N.C.were eye witnesses te theplanestartinginaspinpriortothecrash,however,they weresomedistanceaway.
Mr,Odell Garrison and Mr.D.W.Regester of the C.Acd.ofCharlotte,N.C.were called to investigate the crash.MajorsFredSlane,Jr.and 1.M.lackey of the Statesville C.A.P.werecalledteassisttheC.A4.A.in the investigation along withStateHighwaypatrolmanC.L.Ritter and Deputy Sheriff RichardPerkinsofMooresville.
It was established that both men worked for Washburn PrintingRenney»214 W.Morehead,Charlotte,N.C.,and that Ressing hadrecentlypurchasedtheairplanefromOvercash.The men were flyingtotheMillerAirporttosecureairplaneparts.Upon check withBrockenboroAirport,Charlotte,N.C.,the plane was securelygasedpriortoleavingshortlyafter5:60 Pu,
The plane was a Fairchild M-62-A model and registered N@ 52715..It was completely demolished,however,it did not burn.
Both men had as injuries severe brain lacerations,crushedskulls,broken necks,qrushed chests,compound fractures of femurs,and compound fractures of tibias and fibulas.
It was established that Overcash was in the back seat of thedaneduetosafetybeltsecurelyholdinghiminplaceincockpit;either man was thrown from the cockpit.
There was a definite odor of gasoline in the crash area.

Mr.Richard Chalmers Overcash,63,R.F.D.1,Troutmans,N.C.came to his death sometime 8/23/52 due to Nathral Causes.
Mr.Overcash was found at 3:00 PM this date in bed at hishomebyhisdaughter,Mrs.W.S.Weddington,Troutmans,N.C.
Deputy Shertff Marshall Maness and the undersigned werecalledshortlythereafter.Our investigation revealed that Mr.Overcash was lying on his back,pupils sunken,many flies overhisbody,arms and hands drawn,no evidence of struggle orvomiting.
Mr.Overcakh's personal possessions seemed in order,andmoniesinhistrousers.The lamp was not burning,however,hewascompletelynude.
Mr.Paul Lipe,R.F.D.1,froutmans,N.C.and a neighbor ofMr.Overcash stated that he saw Mr.Overcash pass his home inthemorningofSaturday8/23/52,and had not seen him around hishousesincethattime.
Mr.Overcash lived alone for the last 21 years.
After reviewing the facts,Deputy Maness and the under-Signed were of the opinion that Mr.Overcash died of naturalcauses,and no further investigation or inquiry was necessary.Dr.Tom Griffin,M.D.of Troutmans,N.C.was of the opinionthatwewere.:

Dr.Gerrison,house staff officer of the 79/55 ane Memorial Hospitalcalledtheundersignedshortlyafter5:00 AM 2/9/55 and requested per-mission for an autopsy,and same was granted to erformed.At noonsamedate,Dr.Garrison called back ani advised +t Dre Kimmelstiel,resident pathologist refused,and Dr.W.M,Summerville was advised bytheundersignedtobeaeretosecuremedico-legal evidence.Dr.Summerville performed autopsy at Cavin Funeral Home,Mooresville,N.C.Jate in the afternoon of 2/9/55,and his report attached hereto.
Sheriff J.Charlie Rumple and the undersigned went to Mooresville,and along with Deputy Richard Perkins,and several of the MooresvillePoliceofficers,reviewed the facts and evidence of the case.The copyofthecompleteinvestigationbyallofficerswillbeattachedhereto.
William Larry Charles,27,white male,alias John Charles,Mooresvillebarber,did the cutting;first arrested by Mooresville Policeman W.L.Hudspeth Sunday 2/6/55 on assault and cutting charge.Subsequent warrantswereservedonCharlesbyDeputyRishardPerkinscharginghimwithassaultwithadeadlyweapon,and on Melvin Bailey and J.B,Corle,
fhe fight at the skating rink et Mooresville at 12:10 AM 2/6/55 in-cluded Harold Moore and girl friend Troy Fewperman,Virginia Alexander,|Allen &Ralph Shue,Gene and Cecil booke,and possibly others -and thenthegangwenttoSmith's cafe where J.B.Corle,V.S.Harris,Robert lL.Overcash,Melvin Bailey,Troy Fesperman,Virginie Alexander,Allen &Ralph Shue,Gene &Cecil Cooke,and Harold Moore &girl friend were.
Participants of the ectual fight were George Curtis,Pat Hartsell,Richard Follette,Williem larry Charles,Mary Privette,Thelma Thompson,Harold Moore,Troy Fesperman,Thelma Thompson,Virginia Alexander,andMelvinBaileyaccordingtotheinvestigatingofficers.
Robert Lee Overcash died 5:00 AM 2/9/55,J.B.Corle,58 Carl Avenue,Concord,N.D.received severe cut left hip,fleivin Bailey 424 Allison St.,Concord,severe cut in stomach,V.S.Harris,225 Barnhart Ave.,Concord,was not cut.ate cee Charles cut all these with a combat Imife inpossessionoftheMooresvillePeliceOfficers.Charles stated that hedidthecutting,that he had the knife on his car seat.thet Melvin Baileypulledhimfromhiscarseat,and that he grabbed his knife and startedoenteee:Curtis was apparently pulled out of the Charles car by Overcashasstatedi4theoccupantsoftheCharlescarandGene&Cecil Cooke,Thelma and Virginia Alexander worked him over severely.
Williem Larry Charles,Alias John Charles,was ordered held in thecommonjailofIredellCountywithoutbondpendingtheoutcomeofBaileyandCorle,however,Pineal hearing was waived on 2/9/55,and boundovertoSuperiorCourt,Iredel County in May to air the truth forward.

COMMENT:This autopsy was performed at Cavin Funeral Home,Morreeville,N.C.at approximately 4:00 P,M.on Feb.9,1955.In attendance were severalmembersofthePoliceDepartmentofMeoreeville,N.C.and members of theFuneralHomeStaff.
EXTERNAL EXAMINATION:This revealed the body of a normally developedWhitemaleefpearingtobeapproximatelythirtyyearsofage.There wae acurvedsurgicalincisionextendingfromthelowerleftlateralchestwallacrosstheanteriorupperabdomen.The wound was closed by sutures,The proximalendofthewoundformeda'Y shape.There were small linear lacerations oftheleftthumbandindexfinger.There were sutured surgical wounds in therightandleftinguinalarea.There were two small abrasions of the forehead,There were several small areas of ecchymoses in the anticubital spaces andattheankles.There were no other significant external findings.
PLEURAS;The left pleura was thickened and covered by a yellow-gray exudate.The right pleura presented a few areas of dense adhesion over the apex,laterallyandposteriorly.There is approximately 100 cc.of thick sero-hemorrhagic fluidintheleftpleuralcavity.
LUNGS:The left lung is collapsed and dark red in color.The right lung showssomedependentcongestion.The cut surfaces of the left lung allow a small amount joffrothyfluidtoescape.The cut surfaces of the right lung show considerablefrothyfluid.The tracheobronchial tree presents considerable injection throughouttheleftlung.The bronchi,on this side,contain much thick purulent material.
HEART:The pericardium is smooth throughout and the sac contains a normalamountofclearfluid.The myocardium,the endocardium,and valves are notremarkable.The coronary vessels present scattered atheromatous plaques.No points of occlusion are demonstrated.
ABDOMEN:The peritoneal cavity contains approximately 200 cc.of sero-hemorrhagic fluid,There is a thick yellow-gray exudate over the liver,thestomachandthespleen.There are a number of loose fibrinous adhesionsintheupperabdemen,
LIVER:This organis softand thereis some diminutionofthenormaldobulararchitecture.The extrahepatic ducts are patent.

SPLEEN:This organ is approximately three times the normal size and
of soft consistency.The cut surfaces show obliteration of the normal follicular
architecture.
PANCREAS:Negative.
ADRENALS:Negative.
KIDNEYS:These organs are normal in size.The capsules strip easily leaving
smooth surfaces.There is a clear line of demarcation between the cortical and
medullary portions.The uteters,bladder,and prostate are not remarkable.
GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT:Negative,with exception of stomach which is to
be described below.
BLOOD VESSELS:Negative.
LYMPH NODES:Negative.
HEAD:Not examined.
OTHER EXAMINATIONS:There is a sutured wound in the left diaphragm.
There is a sutured wound of the fundus of the stomach.
ANATOMICAL DIAGNOSIS:1.Surgical wounds of lower leftéchest,anterior
left abdomen,right and left inguinal regions,
2.Pleuritis,left,severe.
3.Surgical repair of left diaphragm and stomach.
4.Ascites,slight.
5.Splencmegaly.
MICROSCOPIC PROTOCOL
PLEURA&Sectionsthroughthe left pleurashows aheavy inflammatory
reaction,Theright pleura shows some fibroticchange.
LUNGS:The left tung shows compression of the alveoli,marked congestion,
and many alveoli filled with red bleod celle and fluid.Both lunge show areas
of broachopneumonia.
HEART:Sections through the myocardium are act remarkable.
LIVER:Sections show areas of marked parenchymatous degeneration and |
some inflammatory reaction in the periportal connective tissue.
SPLEEN:Thies organ shows marked congestion.
ADRENALS:Sections show scattered pigment and areas of degeneration.
KIDNEYS:These show no significant microscopic changes.
OTHER ORGANS:Not remarkable.
DIAGNOSIS:1,Surgical wounds of left lower chest,anterior left abdomen,
right and left inguinal regions.
2.Pleuritis,left,severe.
3.Surgical repair ofleft diaphragmandstomach.
4.Ascites,slight.
5.Acute splenomegaly.
6.Parenchymatous degeneration of liver.

Since the deceased was the driver of the car,no inquest was necessary.
