All ecidence laats to the conclusion that all three, Thomas, Joseph, and John, came from Ireland, or. vobeibty nga probably between 1710 and 1719, it is possible that Joseph and John were brothers or cousins of Thomas, but thus far there reems nothing to indicate this exoept dates, proximity of children Names, and the fact that a reeérd states that Joseph Sharp, Jr., (son of Joseph and Mary (?yle) She rpe and his sister Elizabeth, went to lredell County, North Carolina, as did most of the grandchildren of Thomas Sharp and his son Thomas Sharpe, Jr,, On the other hand, if Thomas Sharpe of Ceeil County, Maryland, were brothers to John and Joseph, it vould seen that the records should show some cross connection . It is fair to conclude, however, that THOMAS (10) SHARP, (d, 1749 in ‘Cecil County, “aryland,- ponsibty buried in the Sharp “raveyard’, came from Ireland, whither hig ancestors had emigrated from Scotland, or possibly at " } tee ee sy! ae ses MONA Pi Pi ony ‘go Mngland, to America before 1719, Being one of the Scotch-Irish influx arriving about that time, By deed 5=20-1719, he purchased from Charles Carroll of annapolis, all that traet of land called ‘“uilt Glaes (251 acres), part of a tract of land heretofore called ““oclety" » (Ref. Ke Swann Route 1, Box 147 Statesville, N, Ci. 28677 Dear Mr. Swann: I appreciated getting your February 14 letter - year after we first exchanged letters, I wish that I had Shaw = Lovelace problem, but I'm afraid I do not have, yet solved the question of the county in Tennessee in which my grandparents lived: Malcolm Howard (1810-1848) and Cynthia (Shaw) (1812-1880) - both born in North Carolina. I only know Cherokee Co., Tex., in 1854-55, from Tennessee. There is some reason to think their children were names, They were: William A., b. 1834; Joseph _A., b. 1838; Mary Ann (1843-1892); John Eldridge (1845-1284); Marcaret Sarah Shaw (1855-1939), I suspect that the first son may-nave been named Howard, and the second for his prandfather Shaw: but of cx ing. Mary Ann, the first daughter, could very well prandmother Shaw. I have been so very busy in my job this nast year that virtually no time to devote to my hobby of genealogical reseirch, continue to be very interested in it. As I am only 44 years old ( already had this hobby for 13 years) I expect to have time to u ye2rs ahead, Sincerely, Arthur M. They moved to Cherokee Co., Tex., abt, 1853-55, My grandmother said she thought the full name of her grandfather was William Malcolm Howard, but the Texas courthouse records show only Malcolm, so I cannot say, ’ ; The children of this family were named, in order of birth: William A., Joseph A., Henry T,, Mary Ann, John Eldridge (my great- grandfather), Margaret Je, and Sarah Shaw. ’ The earliest U.S. Census listing that I have (1860,' Cherokee Co., Tex, ) lists Malcolm and Cynthia as follows: oe Malcolm Howard 50 Male Farmer Born N. C. Cynthia " 48 Fem, Born N. C, Thus, the date of birth indicated in-the Genealogical Helper (1810) was incorrect. It appears that Malcolm may have been born in N. C. about 1800. If you should run across anything which would be of help to me; I should be very happy to receive at, I do not know the parents of my Cynthia Shaw, nor have I run across a reference to the Frost family in my limited research, Sincerely, ) : CUT... We had been informed by a reliable researcher in Indianapolis that the only John Dickens in Kentucky at a certain time (when we knew ours had to be .there) was the John Dickens of Lincoln County who married Elizabeth CALDWELL. BUT, we later learned that this John Dickens was one of Christopher Dicken's sons of early Virginia, and we had a ‘few other documents proving it was that same, as we had copies of his signature. THEN we found copy of deed executed by OUR old John Dickens of Clay Co., Indiana, which showed his MARK on the deed of sale, together with his wife's MARK, Elizabeth G. Dickens. Apparently her maiden name was a G something or other. “+ ‘fy Leridiy Comer et At one time we heard someone telling that what sounded like COMET was her name. However inasmuch as her name was Elizabeth G. Dickens, we think perhaps her maiden name: might have been GOMMITT, as I have seen that name among Shenandoah County, Virginia, records. It's pretty hard to "catch up" with any such error when once we circulate them around, we have found to our dismay. But at least there are some other CALDWELLS in our SHEPPARD family and we started not long ago to try getting more information on them. You will note on the enclosed latest edition of our SHEPPARD Family (2/12/68) on page 8, child No. 7 JOSIAH SHEPPARD. He was a brother to our grandfather James Findley Sheppard, No. VI on page 7 wo Os JOSIAH's sons married CALDWELL girls. Oliver G. Sheppard born 12/29/1873 in Strang, Fillmore Co., Nebraska; died 11/25/1925. Married MYRTLE CALDWELL. Nothing further known about her as Bertrand Vgjncent Sheppard born 4/16/1879 in Strang, Nebr.; died 10/25/1957. Married 8/18/1898, KITTY ALICE CALDWELL. Nothing more as yet. Presumably Myrtle and Kitty Alice were sisters, though we do not know that as yet, ©1 I recently wrote to one of Bertrand Vincent She ard's sons, a DELBERT SHEPPARD in Denver, asking for more explicit data on APe GEESE people, etc., and’ hope we will be hearing from him before too long. Ag goon as we do, we shall be glad to relay, Wifitever Caldwell information he gives us. They have 5 children, all married. The other brother, Oliver G. Sheppard and Myrtle Caldwell have 2 sons. However, we don't have addresses for those children, nor their dates, places of birth etc., so are trying to get it all as complete as possible. We have actually “started to commence to begin" on our BOOK, starting of course with the SHEPPARD "clan". Have made up 4 “work list" beginning with JOHN I as No. 1, and numbering each one in chronological order by generations. So far, have almost 1,00U of - them and just in the 8th generation with 2 or 3 more generations yet Co bist. We believe we are on the right track toward finding Mother's GRAVES ancestor, as per note at top of enclosed GRAVES-DICKENS Family list. A lady in Morgan Co., Indiana, has been trying to find the PROOF necessary for us that JOHN & MARY GRAVES of Clark Co., Indiana 1820, and of Morgan Co., Ind., 1821-1827 were the same JOHN & MARY GRAVES wh bought land in CLAY County, Indiana, where our ISAAC lived, bought in 1837, then sold it to our ISAAC in 1839. IF they are the same JOHN & MARY, then we have JOHN's father also. -2- Because the JOHN GRAVES who settled in 1820 in Clark County, Indiana, was a son of Johann Sebastian Graff, the Immigrant. Johann came to Philadelphia, re. in 1736 the ship Alexander and Mary, Cogether with 25 Other Palatines, making a total of 130 persons, from the Palatinate of Germany. Pa, Where at least two sons were born, he moved to Orange (now ALAMANCE ) County, North Carolina. Johann later moved to Union Co., Tennessee, where he died in 1804, aged about 101. Was born in 1703 in Germany. Said to have had several Children, one historian Claiming 17 Children; but Roy Stockwell, who wrote up the book- JOHN GRAVES AND HIS DESCENDANTS, in 1954, Kansas City, Missouri, could find information on only 5 of them. A large book containing 246 pages, it describes FOUR of those 5, with Only 15 lines about our (7) JOHN. "JOHN moved Co Indiana about 1820; had & children: DANIEL, BOSTON, HENRY, WILLIAM, DAVID, and BETsSy,"' No ISAAC mentioned, so we ignored this Possibiléty for a long, long time, » Indiana, census; DANIEL, BOSTON , HENRY, show a son living with John of ISAAC's age, » Indiana, Showing the same JOHN with a - And our Isaac was not married until January 1832, obtaining the License in Putnam County which is the connecting" county between MORGAN where JOHN lived, and CLAY where our Isaac Graves and John Dickens families lived. And he married Elizabeth Dickens, son of that John, SO, this time, we are g0ing all-out to get absolute PROoF. in 1820, was in CLAY County in 1830 census, Bht some land there ', also MARSHALL & GRAVES on Did YOU ever hear that our earliest ancestor JOHN GREEN had been in the "Expedition against Canada in 17462" A young fellow enlisted June 6, 1746, as a Private in a MARY LAND Company in the "Expedition against Canada 1746" » 4ccording to item in book SIDE-LIGHTS OF MARYLAND HISTORY, Volume 1, page 270, QUR JOHN GREEN was born about 1726 so would have been just 20 years old in 1746, and he lived in Maryland but we don't know how early he was there. VY t “Ye "/ was BENJAMIN MARSHALL (born 1770-1780) the father of DR, JESSE (top of page One)?7??? ALL our evidence points toward this likelihood but we lack the necessary PROOF. Can someone please supply that proof for us? The following is all we know about BENJAMIN: On December 1, 1830, BENJAMIN MARSHALL bought 80 acres in Dover Township (now Middle- ton Twp.) in Lafayette County, Missouri, described as the West 4 of NEX Section 8 Township 50 Range 24, which lies’about 44 miles south of the Missouri River, BENJAMIN died sometime prior to July 14, 1839, date of a deed of sale by Benjamin's widow MARY and their children and heirs, listed as follows: lary Marshall, widow, and JOHN MARSHALL, MARTHA PARISH alias (HOUSE), JOHN A, & ELIZABETH WHITE, WILEY MARSHALL, ELIZA MARSHALL AND DANIEL MARSHALL of Scott County, Arkansas; and JANE & ELI H, McFADIN and of Washington Co., Arkansas; and ALLEN MARSHALL and ISHAM MARSHALL (no address given so presumably these last two | were still in Lafayette Co., Mo.). The property was sold to a PETER MARSHALL of Scott Co., Ark., who resold it 9/19/1840 to Jesse Cole. Just across the Missouri River north of Lafayette County, Mo., is CARROLL County where we know for certain that our DR, JESSE MARSHALL was living in 1840. His 7th son was born there on April 30, 1840, and possibly also the next two, Harvey & Rebecca, 1842, Search of Washington Co., Arkansas 1840 census failed to reveal any JESSE G. MARSHALL. DR. JESSE & NANCY were living in Indiana in 1838 when 6th son ENOCH was born. It ap- pears logical that they removed temporarily to Arkansas where his brothers and sisters were living at time of the father's death; then Jesse & Nancy went over into Carroll Co, BENJAMIN's widow MARY was living with her son JOHN in 1850 Scott Co., Ark., as Census 1850 shows JOHN K, MARSHALL and wife SUSAN; 4 sons, WILLIAM P,, PETER, FRANCIS M,, and ANDREW (born 1842-1850 in Ark.), also MARY age 69 born in Virginia. John K, Marshall's birth shown as 1811 in Tennessee. Was this BENJAMIN MARSHALL (b. 1770-1780) the same BENJAMIN (born 1775-1794) living in Lincoln County, TENNESSEE in the 1820 census? Their age-groups match, also age-group of their Wives! Als sincere apologies for not having replied to most of those fine letters, after aj] work you did in collecting the information. In your letter of iast November, you asked if I knew whom MARTHA Green married. fs M do not have that informatidt! “ie was listed in John's home in 1776 in Montgomery @., Maryland, and again in John's will dated May 30, 1793, wherein he just says "to my daughter MARTHA" but doesn't say her-married name, if she had ohe. In. 1793 she , have been about 30 years of age. I have a copy of Rowan Co. marriage for a MARTH: GRE“N Co a GEORGE REED dated May 12, 1785, when "our" Martha would be about 22. so presumably that is our Martha Green Reed (7). ; However, from all those notes received both fro Queen, we learn . SO very many GREENS, but it must. be ours, as I hurriedly scanne later. i which might identify her, was the name of Bondsman. Only one was given, an H. Magoune. Does that name Magoune mean anything you which might link this Martha to-our JOHN Green's family for sure? And it's 5 Reed on the copy I received. I guess it was the ISAAC which scared me most! I find that that "old JEREMIAH GREEN" also had a son ISAAC, in Rowan County, so ‘now I'll have Co study harder to identify which one was ours. The Jeremiah~ISAAC no doubt was the one who bought the most land! Qur Isaac would be about 23 years old (born about 1755) «in 1778 the date of purchase from Richard & Eleanor Green, a part of "old Jeremiah Green's 541 acres..." Now, we're wondering who that old JEREMIAH was! Maybe he was our JOHN's brother who had already migrated into Rowan County and the reason why JOHN came. Our Isaac Green, Sr. had 2 girls and 5 boys on the census for 1800 Iredell, and we of one of his sons, Isaac Jr., of course. Perhaps another one was that THOMAS ? Also perhaps the HENRY and DAVID H. who also appear in your letters. We do not know whether JOHN's daughter Dianna (or Diane) had died in Maryland, but sumably she must have. At least she isn't mentioned in John's will, I |don't Suppose that SAMUEL GREEN could also have been son of ISAAC Sr., could Isaac's wife would have had to be considerably about 1814 (Samuel died 1847 aged 33), Sorry we never get to travel ANYWHERE except around town usually in taxicab! Would like Co meet your daughter of Modesto. If she ever gets over here to San Jose, perhaps we can. We do have some very good, old-time Des Moines friends who live in Modesto and they come Over whenever he can get his old car working sufficiently to come over Altamount Pass through the mountains. They always want to take us back with them, but my sister has bad case of ‘spinal arthritis and it's too uncomfortable to do any kind of traveling, That THOMAS GREEN might also be one of WILLIAM GREEN & Celia Looman (or Lew sons. On the 1800 census he is listed with 2 sons under 10; 2 daughters 16-4 He himself was then 34. sale We don't have a thing more about the name GATTON than what is on our GREEN Family namefjthat the piece of land called "John's Delight" and later named "Gatton Fortwne'' was purchased from William Winn and Ann his wife, by our THOMAS GRE I believe Thomas later called it "Elizabeth" but I may be wrong. "Elizabeth" c another piece of land which Thomas just leased. We surely do appreciate the remarkable information you have furnished us... that picture of WILLIAM ("BILLY") GREEN, too, with the write-up. My sister ca the family resemblance. Although the name GREEN doesn't connect until 4 generat back, we're still a part of that family. I also received a nice letter from Mrs. William L, Davis, asking ME to help ing something about an ALICE HEATH! Sorry to state that I still haven't ans\ appealing letter, though it's the very. next one on my docket to write, The hadn't meant a blessed théng, so I had.nothing to give her and just didn't get start Neither my sister nor I have been in too good health for a few months, but quite perky for a 70-year-old: But household duties, lawn-watering, and stacks other letters on our genealogy project just kept me from delving into the Gk earlier. What Mrs. Davis quoted was a will: Mary L. Green, devisor--Alice HEATH*-heirs "in Book 8 page 49: Mentioned were JOHN SHAW; JAMES SHAW; MARY E. PADGil; CHARLES W, GREEN (he got the feather bed); Heirs of ALICE HEATH, large: pictur ALICE (their mother, deceased); Appts. John R, Albea, exor; L..T. Simpson; Fleet S, Steele. Mrs. Davis's grandfather was JAMES ALONZO HEATH and his father THOMAS wl JOHN HEATH. That's as far back as she knows her Heaths. With BILLY GREEN's photograph and write-up which YOU so kindly sent us, L now kn ALICE HEATH was! (I THINK!) She must have been the daughter of CHARLES Wy. G son of William M, Green, son of Isaac Jr. But I wonder who the MARY L. GREEN, was? Charles W.'s wife was Julia‘C. Perhaps Mary L. was wife of Alice's brott rh a sister to Alice. \ perhaps a sister to Alice \ JB hey Again, let me thank you dear ones for all the time and trouble you have taken t us. He said he could not positively rule out the possibili- ty of a massive attack across the border, but added: “I have my doubts.”” The general noted that Operation Hastings, an extreme- ly successful spoiling operation along the northern frontier had netted large amounts of sup- plies launch a But Operation Prairie. its successor, has uncovered jew supplies, although it resulted in about 1,200 Communist dead nearly a quarter more than Hastings. One reason the Communists have such a supply problem is that the Marines hold “‘the rockpile,” a strategic mountain which overlooks several jungle trails and mountain valleys that had been primary infiltration routes for the Communists.
