Miss Fay Lovelace gave me jour name and address, so to you in hopes you might have some information that = si ” * . 5 < nv . ‘Yr ¥ lawn researcn my husband's Lovelace line. My husband's great-grandfather, Nelson Lovelace, was born in iredell County, North Carolina, uctober 16, 1801, the son of John Lovelace (who drowned 1810) and Sarah (Cash) Lovelace. John's widow sarah Cash Lovelace took her 4 children, nelson, Clarissa, Nancy Garoline, and wiley, to soodford County, ‘Kentucky in 1813. they lived there until 1829 when they all went to Marion County, Missouri. we are unable to identify this John Lovelace who married Sarah Cash, or find the names-of his parents, grandparents, etc. Miss Fay Lovelace said you wrote her that a lady, mrs. Stone of raris, Kentucky, had written you at one time saying she thought her ancestor, Jeremiah Lovelace, was an older half-brother of Nelson Lovelace. this ig the first time we've found anyone who knew of our Nelson Lovelace. Did she send any material that might help me’ Anything on Jeremiah, or Nelson, or a John Lovelace, might give me some clue that would help. we have written both wilkes and iredell counties for some record of our John Lovelace (father of Nelson) but they say they have nothing On him. mr. X. Le Moore, President of the Genealogical Society of the uriginal wilkes Co., whose address is 301 Kensington Ave., ynorth- wilkesboro, N.C. 28659, wrote me that “The Lovelace Community was named for John Lovelace one of the pioneer settlers of old Wilkes Co. Archibald iovelace also lived in this section and his will ig on record here. there is no will or record of John Lovelace." in 1790 census of Wilkes County there is a John Lovelace who had 5S males over 16 years, 3 males under 16 years, and 5 females. wWe have wondered if our John (father of Nelson) could be a son of this John who was listed in 1790 census. if Jeremiah's descendant, Mrs. Stone, was correct anc her Jeremiah was an older half-brother of our Nelson, that would indicate that John of 1790 census was married twice and Sarah Cash his 2nd wife. Someone sent me data saying the John of Wilkes CO «, Was Married to Ann Law, but 1 do not know the proof of this. { would greatly appreciate any help you can give me on finding the John that was father of our Nelson Lovelace. Had you heard of our Nelson anywheresexcept from the Mrs. Stone of Faris, Ky.? Please tell me what you know about John of Wilkes County (1790 census) and do you know where he is buried. And anything you know about the parents of our Nelson Lovelace. I am enclosing a stamped, self-acdressed envelope for your convenience. ‘thank you in advance for any help you can give us. Sincerely, Elia. Bewle (Mrs. Wilfred L. Bowles) Rural route Bowen, Ill. 62316 March 30, 1870 Mr. T. g. SWann R.l - Box 147 Statesville, N. C. 28677 Dear Mr. Swann: My husband and I are still trying to find the parents of his John Lovelace who drowned in fall of 1810 in Iredell Co., N. C. This John Lovelace left a widow, Sargh(Cash) Lovelace, and four children: Nelsom—wiley, Clariesa, and Nancy. The tombstone of this Nelson Lovelweegives birth date as 1601, but the 1850 census of Marion County, Missouri (where Nelson lived and died) gives his age as 44 years and his mother's (Sarah Cash Lovelace) age as 60. The 1860 census of Marion County, Missouri gives Nelson's age as 55 & his mothers age as 70. These census records would indieate Nelson being born 1805 or 1606. And since the census would also indicate that his mother, Sarah, was born 1790; surely the census birth date of our Nelson must be the correct date. His mother would have only been 11 years old in 1801, and while girls did marry young, that would be just too young. You sent a list of children of Blias Lovelace and wife, Ann Roby Lovelace, and among children was a son John born 1783. This John would have been 22 years old in 1805 when our Nelson was born, which would be about the average age for most young men of that day to have their first child. So we are wondering if you know anything more about this John Lovelace, son of Blias? Did he go with his father to Kentucky, or might he have remained in Iredell County? And do you have any record of whom he married or nis children? What year did Blias leave North Carolina? Vachel Lovelace, brother of Elias, also had a son John born 1790 but he would have been too young to be father of our Nelson in 1805. There is still the possibility that the John we are hunting could be a son of John of Wilkes County. orl wonder if our John was the son of either James or David, the brothers of John of Wilkes Co.? These 3 brothers being mentioned as sons of Isaac in deed from Nathan Roby. Do you know anything about the descendants of this James or David? Surely our John Lovelace of Iredell must have been of the same family line as the others in that county. It seems odd that there @e no further record of the John Lovelace of Wilkes county. 30 I suppose there is a chance that our John is this same John, and that Sarah Cash was a second or third wife. I'm enclosing a stamped, self-addressed envelope for your convenience. We certainly appreciate all the information you have sent us. Sincerely, eke, ee 4 (Mrs. Wilfred L. Bowles) ; f 7 ( y { = <_<. Joan Lovelace m. Robert Caesar. over) Kural route Bowen, Lllinois 62316 November 17, 1969 Mr. T. EB. Swann R.l, Box 147 Statesville, N.C. Dear Wr. Swann We certainly do appreciate your sending us the letters from Mrs. Stone 1959 concerning the Lovelace line. Yes, the Robert Nelson Lovelace she mentioned is of my husband's line; he was my husband's uncle ~ a brother of my husband's mother. kHobert Nelson Lovelace died in March 1965 just a few days after the death of my husband's mother, fYhey are both buried in Palmyra, Marion County, Migsouri. We have a copy of the record of the Lovelace family that Kobert Nelson Lovelace compiled. Hkobert Nelson Lovelace was superintendant of the Palmyra, Missouri schools many years ago when his Ghildren were small, I do wish we could find some record of the John Lovelace who was the father of our Nelson Lovelace b, 1801 in Iredell Co. N.C. It seems this Mre. Stone could be correct in thinking that the John Lovelace of Wilkes Co., married twice and his 2nd wife was Garah Cash and they had son Nelson. We have wondered who his widow Sarah Cash went with when she moved to Woodford Co., Kentucky? Possibly she went with some of her family. Concerning the property of John Lovelace of Wilkes Co., I have a note in my fides saying a Moravian Land Grant Case in the courts was decided against John Lovelace in 1800 or 1802. Could it be he left Wilkes county after that and moved to Iredell county? I am returning the Mrs. Stone letters and your notes as I thought you would want to keep them for your files. Il have made a copy of this data for my files. i think it is remarkable that you at age of 87 have such a good memory and keep such an interest in this genealogical research. tThanke again for taking the time and trouble to look up this material and send it to me. if you should find anything further that might help me identify our John Lovelace, we'd appreciate hearing about it. Hope you have a very pleasant fhanksgiving Day next week, and a very happy Christmas next month.
