Member of Virginia Company. (It was from the Aucher Line that this branch of Love- laces can claim descent from Geoffrey de Saye, a surety under Magna Carta.) Sir William Lovelace of Woolwich, 1583-1627. Married Anne Barne. Prancis Lovelace, 1620-1678. To Virginia before 1650. Married Blanche Talbot, 2nd wife. Governor of New York 1667-1673. Edward Lovelace, Died 1714. Married and had John Baptist Lovelace of Duchess County N. Y. In 1715 John Baptist Lovelace deeded to Trinity Church 63 acres of the Jumel estate. (Aaron Burr married the Widow Jumel). A portion of the land is still owned by the church. He married Eleanor and died in 1765. Will recorded at Fredrick, Md. William Lovelace, of Maryland and North Carolina, married Margaret Beall, daughter of James and Margaret Edmonston Beall. (Note) This record of only one son John who went to 8S. C. I send copy for the file, and also one to Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Heard. In the census of 1790-in N. Ce. I found but two Lovelaces - John and Archie = and both in Wilkes Co. There must have been omis- sions, something thet must be taken into account in these early censuses - 2nd maybe some later ones. In the enclosed record I think Sarah, living alone on prop- erty worth $2,000, might have been the widowed mother of Nelson and Wiley, whose property was listed at only a few hundred dollars. Box 514 Bonham, Jexas 754) 5 6-17-68 Dear Mr. Swann: Just to-day I've had a photostat made of the F.B. Lovelace letter. It is so plain - so much clearer that the original. Thanks so many times for trusting me with it. I am sending you a copy of the bill of sale of slaves to my gr grfather, William Lovelace of slaves when the David Holman Estate Was sold after their deaths. I'm sorry that this is no better. Juanita (Mrs. Fred Drake), Route 1, Lockney, Texas writes me that she has the originals that her aunt, Miss Lottie Cowart had loaned when I had the phorostats made several years ago. The Lazarus Holman letter, I trust, is among these papers, The latter part of May, I mailed a letter to Mr. Harry Wright Newman at 917 18th Street N W, Washington, D.C. This letter was returned indicating that he had moved and his present address was unknown. I wonder if you know his pres- ent mailing address. I also wonder if it bs possible for me to get a copy of the Lewis Graveyard by Miss Lazenby and the material by Dr. Philip F. Langenour. I em always so gratef for any information that you amy send, n I have been slowed up on my typing as my yougest brother, Ray, had an emergency appendectomy the 29th of May. The ap- pendix had ruptured and gangrene had set up. He had a won-~ derful surgeon in Sherman, Texas and with the use of present day drugs he seems to be OK, He is driving the car on short trips. . I would love so much working on family history records wath someone but I'm still a long way from working too long ata time, I'll return your notes just as fast as I can type them. x Sincerely, etn, ae Ree ee NT Alse understand that Catherine was prebably ist married te isaac Levelace, brother te Charles. GAITHER ~~: 1005 CHESLEY Dr. LOUISVILLE, Ky. 40219 May June, 4, 1973 Mr. T.E.Swann Statesville, N.C. Dear Mr. Swann: Was glad to get your letter of 3/20/73, and was happy to know you were both feeling as well as usual. I hope your garden is doing nicely. We did not get to plant anything until Sat. May, Sth. We planted peas, bunch beans, lima beans, lettice, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, okra, cabbage, and perhaps something I do not remember at this time. However, we had a lot of trouble with our seeds comming up. The tomatoes and cabbage are doing nicely considering all the cold, rainy weather we have had. The weather is just now beginning to warm up some. Seems that the rains have slowed down some, maybe things will start growing. My wife is nof doing too good, due to her accident over a year ago. She cannot stand to take a trip op any distance, therefore, we will not be able to come to N.C., this summer, as much as I wanted to. You mentioned your papers and notes, I surely wish I could come over there and look through them, and copy some notes, etc. If you wish to dispose of them, and if no one there wants them, I would certainly be most happy to receive any and all you might wish to send me. I will be very glad to pay for <2l shipping charges, and a reasonable sum > for your troubles packing and shipping them. In the event you should decide to send some of them to me, I will be very glad to send you whatever shipping charges, packing, etc., in advance. Mr. Swann, I am not asking you for these papers, but in case you should decide you would want me to have some of them, I shall be most happy to recei . That is, any you should want me to have. Whatever you might want to send me, I will assure you will be treasured, and safely kept. I sincerely hope you and Mrs. Swann are both feeling good, and enjoying the spring weather. Since I do not know much to write about, I will be closing. So whenever you feel like writing, I will be Very glad to hear from you both. Our acquaintenanceship has not been a long one, but somehow, you folks seem like real close relatives, and I respect you as such. June 14, 1961. Dear Mr. Swann: Thank you for your letter and reminding me of/Amos Love- lace. I have nothing on him except that he married Tabitha Tomlinson d. of John and Bithy Summers T. Z ransacked such records as f have and can't find his parents. Am ashamed of such a poor memorye A letter from Leona today written from Mexico City Sate urday, where she and Mary, Bill's wife, had flown for the cremation, as it is the only place in the Mexican Republic where it can be done. They were going back to Guadalajara that dav, get their things togeth- er and start for Statesville driving the care’ Bll had = big dog for a guard while he lived in Statesville and still had him. He will be along in the car with them as a protection. She thought they would get to Statesville today or tomorrow. They have been through a grilling experience but nothing seems too much for Leona. I think she must be made of the same stuff as her grandmother, Mary "Pink" Lazenby, as my mother called her, to distinguish her from Marv "Bob" Lazenbye My mother held Mary "Pink" in high esteem. I barely remember her. Keona said the Consul at. Guadalajara had been very helpful, and was a native of Tarboro, a Mr. Edmonson. They lived in a motel, 2 miles from the citv. I hope they make the trip home safely but mighty hot weather here, and perhaps hotter the way they have to come. A little breeze today, and seems to be clouding over. There has been plenty of rain here and flowers and grass in good condition. My middle roomer, who is a psychologist on the staff of Georgetown Universitv, looks after the grass on the plea of needing exercise. He does it so much better than I did. Hoping you and Mrs. Swann are keeping comfortable, and having plenty from the garden, As ever, ahd eg f f / ‘ - J 7 fr ee a pK K th. fo f A A 7 f eos hws F t . We made a quick hastily planned trip there, leaving here Friday P.M, and Coming back yesterday. The major reason for such a trip was thet Barbera, Bill, and family are on vacation there and we wanted to see them. We enjoyed it very much, as always, but hated that we had such a short time to stay. Pop is working now, did I tell you that? He's doing some- thing about some bridge work on a new highway near Danville, He's so happy wm to be occupied after being idle for so long. Apparently there's not a whole lot of money in it, but he'll make enough to live on anyhow, He's enjoying the work too, so we're all pleased that sonething has worked out, D says the job will probably last until this fall sometime, David worked last week at ea farm machinery warehouse helping fill owders, It's pretty hard work and the pay isn't too good, but it helped us through last week, He was hired on a temporary basis anc thinks he will talk with them today about winding up there as soon as possible, He can't work on his thesis at all while working all day there, so he feels he can't keep doing it--especially no more than it pays. Your question about school this fall puzzled me, Even though the assistantship didn't work out, I thought I had told you that we would be a Peabody this year anyhow, We'll keep going as far as we can, and when we run out of money, we'll do something else, The apples sound so good and how we'd love to be there to take advantage of them. It would help out much if we had a place where we could have a garden, but when all we have is a rented apartment, it too much to expect space for a garden with it, So sorry to hear ebout Aunt Penta, I'l] try to get a note off to her soom. Does she still Keep her apartment in Greensborc or has she started staying at the Presby, Home all the time? Nancy has a big upper tooth now, I may have mentioned that it was coring through. Seems that it took a long time to get all the way through, but now tm t£gx it's here it really shines, Wwe keep hoping to hear from Dottie, Frank, and Debbie that they are coming for the weekend, It's a long trip for g wekkend, but we always enjoy it. Must jot a note to Mom and Pop telling them that we arrived o.K. fret j Peta x. Kes ” A’.
