E, 21st Oklahoma City, Oklahoma May 13, 1964 Dear Mr. Swann; About two months ago I received one of the biggest thrille of my genealogical endeavors to find my Love- lace ancestry traced back to a William de Saye, born in Normandy, France in 1015, and who came to England with William the Conqueror. His great, eat grand- gon, Geoffrey de Saye, was a surety for na Charta signed by King John in 1215, Enclosed is all this information taken from several volumes of John°S. Wurts Magna Charta--an organization of those persons = have proved their ancestry to signers of the Magna harta. Mre. Morgan Callaway, Jr., Mise Ruby Cumby Smith and Mre. Stewart Walsh Hornes, sisters, are descended from John Baptist Lovelace through Willian, as you will detect by reading through the enclosed paves, I should correct my statement by telling you that it 1s proved through some pages I don't have here- my records | 3st go through a John Lovelace, who was the v son of William and Margaret Edmonston Lovelace. I managed to get the address of Mise Ruby Cumby Smith, which is 507 West 23rd Street, Austin 5, Texas. I wrote to her on bended knees begging for her records of Francis and Edward Lovelace, the grandfather and fother, respectively, of my John Baptist Lovelace, but she has not answered my letter. You will notice that John Baptist Lovelace came from Dutchess County, New York, You will also notice that part of the enclosed recoris is the ancestry of the Anne Lovelace, who married John Gorsuch, and the other part is of her brother Francis Lovelace, who turns out to be my direct ancestor, I think you will find the enclosed information most interesting and a worthwhile addition to your valuable collection, I just haven't done any good at all on any of my lines the past few weeks, I have kept the enclosed information ali this time only ‘e- cause I thought I would be able to send you more complete records of Francis and Edward Lovelace. The last of his quotation is, "Then we have john Boswell Robey, whose will at Statesville, 1820, mentions wife Patta (Martha), and children Betsey who married Ebenezer Holman, Anne, Anne, Polly, Cynthia, Matilda, Patta, and sons, Greenbe James, Absolom, Barton, and John Randolph. I'm sure he gave her information before he passed on about the fan- ily. My father was Calvin Greene Lovelace. His father was M.R. Lovelace.... I have an idea that the family lived in Virginia before meving te Arkansas, as ence, sixty-three years ago, I was in Dansville, Va., I think, and the porter who carried my case to the taxi said, 'Miss, I just had te Speak to you - my masters name was Lovelace.' I was trav- eling for a newspaper Syndicate. How I wish I had Stayed ever and talked with him, My father was born in Searcy, Arkansas - meved to Texas when papa Was young. July 26/56 Dear Mr. Swann: A very interesting letter today from Mrs. Heard at West Point, Ga. She says she has more of the children of Levi and Sarah Lazenby Lovelace if I want it and of course I do. I think one of these mig’it go in the Lovelace file and one in the Thomas Lazenby file. Levi was a brother of Elam. sl Ghe tells me that the Linnie (Verlinds) mentioned in Charles Lovelace will as Linnie Summers married Benjamin Summers. I have * “nothing on Benjamin except a card I have long had filed away, copied from the Library of Congress: “Alvin Howard Summers, dec'd, 962 De Kalb Ave., Atlanta, published a list of his (Benjamin's) descendants. But I have never been able to get the publication. I have asked Mrse Heard if she knows anything about it. Dear Mr. Swann: Il have been looking into old notes and. have picked up a few items on the William Lovelace puzzle, 1 misread the F. B. Lovelace letter to my father, dated at Bonham, Fannon County, Texas, Jan. 2, 1855. He says (spelling mine! ): "1 am working for Cousin T. B. Stimson at this time but 1 don't know how long I will continue with him, . . 1 will mention the death of Mr. Austin, He died in the Indign Territory... There Were two doctors to see him, They say that it was cold se tled on his lung and they stopped at a tavern with him and “stayed until he died. . . and Uncle W. L. came by Uncle R. Lovelace in Kentucky and rested 8 days and I tell you tiie is a disagreeable place to live in when the wind is from the north and it blows about two-thirds of the time (He-is-telking about Texas-—nowy-i>-thimk).” It looks like Wm. Lovelace went on to Texas? Maybe the wind blew so hard that he went back to Kentucky. Uncle R could have been Ras (Erasms) Lovelace. fF. 3. was Bradshaw in the will - 1 have a faint memory of my father or somebody speaking of “Brad” Lovelace. The census of 1850 shows Wm, and Sarah (Holman) Lovelace, aged respectively 37 and 35, with six chil- dren, whose names are given but which unfortunately I did not copy. Living with them is Thomas B. Stimson (Stimson or Stimpson - the spelling meant nothing in that period), a carpenter, aged 25. 1 place this Jaret Mn sre Stimson as the youngest of the six sons of Basi] and Rachel (Stimson) Stimson, of whom Solomon was the old- est. Their father died imcthexemriuxi#Sntx when the boys were minors. They bought the Henry Lazenby place from William Columbus Summers, in 1839. 1+ was near Providence Church and Henry Lazenby in 1814 had deeded land for a church. This was re-deeded by Basil Stim son, but Providence Church was not built on it. There is‘a Stimson graveyard on the place. On Oct. 16, 1851, Thomas B. Stimson married Rachel E, Lovelace, obviously the oldest jdaughter of Wélliam and Sarah Lovelace. I foun’ this amon; notes gathered in Statesville land records, where it joes not fit im. It is also not far from notes taken from the Old Carolina Watchman, of which there are a few copies in the Library of Congress. 1 jion't know where 1 got the item, but I am sure it is authentic. auite possibly i have told you some of this stuff before - if so, please "excuse it." Swann Route 1 ; Statesville, North Carolina Dear Mr, Swann: I am a descendant of the kovelaces, Allisons, and Sharpes of Iredell County, North Carolina. Through the many letters I write, in addition to the hours of research work, I locatel a distant relative, Mrs. R, E. Stotts of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, who with her husband, who is now deceased, Had spent years accumulating Allison and Lovelace records. Mrs. Stotts has in her possession the original birth records kept by my great, great grandmother Panthea Sharpe Allison of the babies she delivered in [redell County from 1834 to 1856, and I was for- tunate enough to have these records in my possession long enough to copy them since the papercwas too brittle to unbind and run through a duplicating machine. [I typed these records verbatim, and | am sending you a copy of them since Mr. Homer M, Keever wrote to me that you had a large collection of records of those people in that section of the county where my ancestors resided, Many of the names in my great, great grandmother's records are obviously misspelled, but I thought it wise to copy her records just as she had them. I can vouch for the accuracy of her records since the William Loveless--should’ be Lovelace--listed is my great grandfather, and her records coincide with all our family records. You will notice that the records show the date of birth, the name of the father, and the sex of the baby. The figures on the right are undoubtedly the amount of money she received for her services. You will also notice that she has also included the babies delivered of the negro slaves. af? T 4 made efforts, but failed, to locate some individuals or historical\ or genealogical societies in Iredell County so that I could get a copy of these birth records back to the people who could put them to the best use, and I am quite thankful that. the Register of Deeds ‘ passed my letter on to Mr. Keever, and he in turn referred me to you. Mr. Keever tells me you have notes on the Lovelaces all the way back to Maryland, and that you had records showing Panthea Allison's relationship to the Lovelaces. My great grandfather, William Erasmus Lovelace, who was born in 1818, married Panthea Allison, who was the daughter of George and Panthea Sharpe Allison. In the genealogical tax and census records of Lovelaces nee the 1770's, but 1 have been unable to determine which one was the father, 8randfather, etc, of my great grandfather William Erasmus, I am also enclosing Copies I have made of my records of William Erasmus and Panthea Allison Lovelace, of George and Panthea Sharpe Allison, of William and Nancy Allison, and of James and Jane Sharpe. These are my ancestors as you wil] notice from my records, I will be so grateful to you 1f you will share your records with me Carrying back my ancestors as far back 4S your records go. Through the cooperation of the Previous mentioned Mre. R, £, Stotts, I have about al] of the descendants of George and Panthea Sharpe Allison through three generations, and have Several other generations of some lines, You are perfectly free ‘to tell any of your friends that I will Sladly share with them these records.
