Bowles Rural Route Bowen, Illinois 62316 Dear Mrs, Bowles: Many thanks for your kind letter and the information contained in it, just received, I read the letter of Mrs. Stone to Mr. Swann with interest, and I hope you will net mind my teking advantage of Mr. Swenn's addrese to write te him about certain details on whith I do have information and apparently Mre, Stone did not. T am particularly interested in the statement that John Baptist Lovelace was a son of John Lovelace. My information is that he was a son of William, and of course IT would like to straighten that point out. Without looking up my previous letter to you, end noting the report of Mrs. Stene that no trace of what happened to John Lovelece's land had been found by her genealozist, I venture to tell you what happened, at the risk of repeating information previously given (if I did tell you before). My files are at home, and I write this at my office without waiting to look up ny previous letter. Before the evolution certain lands in the area called Lovelaceville, near Wilkesboro, were the property of Unitas Fratrum (Moravian Brethren). When the war Broke cut the Moravian Brethre fled to Pnglend, being Loyalists, and John Lovelace and others, feeling thet the men were traitors and had abandoned the lands, settled there and lived there for years. After the war wes long over, an agent (Marshall) of the church, came back from England and filed suit against John Lovelece to retake the 00 acres of land from John and some thousands of acres from others. It finally went to the Supreme Gourt of North Carolina and the court held that John's title was void, and gave his lends back to the Moraviens. ‘hat answers ‘rs. Stons's genealogists as to what happened to John's land. The report of the decision is in Vol. 1 of the North Carolina Reports, I do wish I could answer as to what happened to John Lovelace personally. William Crowley ani Elisabeth went directly to Georgia from Wilkes, and their son ry born in 1800 in Wilkes Sounty, Georgia. Without having proof for ifs T have umed that John, who disappeared when the court ruled against na was alréady Georgia. I have not made a search for him there, but if he was there - 800 Cengus or the 1810 Census ought to reveal it. I am keeping an ae file on these Lovelace matters, and if I run on to anything which looks like it might be helpful to you, I will surely write, It is of course possible that you are right and John, drowned in 1810 was our mtual ancestor, It would not be surprising to me at 211 that he went back to Iredell where he had a thick batch of kinfolk, Many thanks again for your fine help. Basically the sources agree except for these points: (1) All I have ever seen. say the Gov. never m,; Mrs. Robertson says he did; m. a Blanch Talbot and had ch. (2) All of my sources say the Gov.'s bro. Wm. was killed at a battle in Wales in 1644-45 and it is doubtful he ever m.; Mrs. R. says he did m., had ch., and d. 1648. She goes on to say that from one of the Gov.'s sons, several gen- erations down, there was a John Baptist who was the ancestor: a large southern family. I have no definite reason (pesitive proof) why not to agree with her, but I just can't accept all she says; especially in the later generations. I am enc. a copy of a part of one of Merleen's letters to me. She has fairly well condensed the chart I had made; at le you can get an idea of the early descent. At the bottom I made a note about an Allen Lovejace who was desc. from a John Bapt. I also listed his ch. as they were all in Iredell Co. according to Mrs, Robertson, Have either of you ever heard af any of them? Could there have been 2 John Baptist Lovelaces? There is also a mention of an ISAAC NEWTON LOVELACE who m,. 3 times, the 3rd to a Susannah Cox in N.C. in 1812; he d. 1847. His ch, were a George who went to Penn; Wm. who m. a Margaret Long (They had a df i Abn great gr. son named Roby Lovelace); and an Alfred who went to Texas. Do any of these names-mean anything? I'm ‘beginning to wender if Mrs. Robertson could have gotten some of her lines and generations confused. let me know what you think when and if you have the time. Since their publi- cation in 1910 (see bibliography ) it can no long- er be justly charged that Lovelace was arbitrary or incompetent. He was a conscientious man, and in tolerance was the equal of his predecessor, from whom he had inh rited unfulfille: d promises, unsettled problems, and precedents jn adminis- tration which the Duke of York required to be continued. This made him iutious rather than phlegmatic in what he unde rtook. Yet, in his five years in office, he tran sacted much business by himself, with his councilors, in the high court of assizes, or by commission appointed by him and under his control. He not only watched over his vast territory, but entered into every phase of its needs and diffic ulties. mes admin- istration was harass sed, intern: illy and 1 externally, by Indian troubles, | boundary disputes, an in- surrection in the Delaware country, a rebellion in New Jersey, and incompatibilities of a mixed population of Dutch. English, Swedish, and other natiodalliles.. He interested himself in better ferriage, roads, and transportation by land and water; and the Tewulati ion of trade and extension of commerce. He institut ed the first merchants’ exchange and the first t haven master of the port. He promoted shipb uild ng and him- self owned a fine ship, The Good Fame of Netuv York. He extended pelican and laid out new villages and tow nships, and by purchase for the Duke freed Staten Island from Indian control. He was tolerant toward religious sects, even to Quakers. He was interes ted j in Indian missions and, though unsuccessful, made the first attempt to intro duce the art of printing into the middle British colonies. He furthered the strengthen- ing of “fortif ications and the raising of foot com- panies and troops of horse, keeping them in training. The drift whale, as well as sport fish- cries, engaged his attention, His intercolonial activities, especial lly with New England, are out- standing, for he instituted the _first_continuous post road between New York and_B soston, under a postmaster. It was while on a visit to Con- necticut to promote this laudable object, that his vigilance lapsed, and he lost New York to a Dutch naval squadron, July 30-Aug. 9, 1673. Had he been at his fort and used all the meager resources he had, the capitulation could not have been prevented. The defenses of New York were not — of withstanding an attack of a Dutch naval ¢ edition, alre: idy encour: ged by former triumphs, By the loss of New York Lovelace was imy poverished and degr: ided. I shall write to this Henry Lovelace to-day. Henry is a popular given name for some of the Lovelace families here with whom we have not been able to make | canecteeha These here in Fannin Comty came from Tenneessee and settled near Sine Grove in the eastern part of the countye I - just like you are about our children staying liome to work, 1 think thet our Bill is just about ready to come home to stay after spending one year in Europe study~ ing, 2 years in Africa teaching, and now 2 or more years in St Thomas which to me is a foreign countrys One of my friends is leaving in a few days for a tour of several places — in Europe. I prefered staying heme. | | I am sending you a copy of my letter to Miss Cartlidge. My letter may not contain one word of interest to her but amybe I can learn something about her line of the Prathers. My cousin, Mrs. Middlebrooks, is a member of some sort of gemealogical club in ine, La. that has this correspondence project. My cousin mailed me some infotmation that had the Prather name listed in a Lovelace family, so that is how I got Miss C's address. I believe that I wrote you that I have started putting my Lovelace history together. I have started with my great grandfather, Charles, son ef Thomas and Amelia Dyson Lovelace. He is the one that I can check records best on here in Fannin Ce as he settled in the community where I was born and reared. 1 found a newspaper clipping by Judge W.A. Evans that I had clipped from our local paper» It was printed when I was ls or 15 years old. As a little girl, I knew Judge Evans and his fa,ily well as I ave carried many a pound ef _ good Jersey country cow butter to his home. I still wonder what I may ask of the lady who lives in g.jisbury, N.C. about my early forefathers, I have copies of the wills of Flneanor and Thomas Robey. Mrs Queen hasn't sent me any recent information. So far I have been so disappointed in the information th 4 ‘ that ghe sent. I sent her what I thought was a good outline but she seems to have paid little or ne attention to it. I do wonder about Cassandra's marriage. J have a copy of her will dated Dec 12, 1811 in which she names her two daughters, Sally Lovelace and Matilda Lovelace, Thomas and Erasmus phic are her executors, The will is witnessed (over Ja EC I indexed - as I do w 1% is V . ; ra : } ee Now, 1 am in the living room with [TV cartoons on and trying to keep three. kids out c T Ss }e ae ee tT chen whi Le +o ry j Ss pape ~ % "my 2 gee t C j fr iT o ny! 9 ty f% ya + + soon so he will have fuli control then; As for your English ancestor chart, itipretty well matches uv to this} : excenvt you left out one generation.
