I-did go down to Person County to check on my mother's side of the family (Moore) «. - Last fall you indicated that’ you might locate some information to further clarify the Azariah Gatton tract on Hunting Creek as it relates to the Irvin tract and Ezra Swann land. I checked the land grants in theoffice of the Secretary of State in Raleigh and found Gatton on Hunting ° Creek at the Iredell-Davie line and on a branch, a tributary of Hunting Creek. It is well within reason that the tract was near Skyview Lake as you suggested, I imagine that should one find. time that the tracts can be traced, I do want you to ‘know that I appreciate your continuing’ interest, My wife and I plan to be in Iredell a few hours this weekend, I gm to make a little talk to the 01d Students! Starting _ with your first letter of 12 Nov., let me say that I see no connection between the Cowles of Iredell Co. and Wm. Temple Cole of Salisbury. 2. Wn. Temple Cole,-in his will (Salisbury, Rowan Co., N.C. 1777) says “I was born in Dublin, Ireland in Angior Street nearly opposite the playhouse". He moved to Rowan Co. prior to 1750, i was told last week by Basil O'Connell, Irish genealogist, who was in Houston for the Texas State Genealogical Society meeting, that if I would write Eric McCauliffe in Dublin, he could give me information on the Cole and the Temple families, William Temple Cole had an only son, Wm. Temple Cole, Jr., and an only daughter, Henrietta. Wn. Temple Cole Sr.married (ca 1753 in N.C.) Sarah___ (widow Wilson). Wm. Jr. married (1) Nellie Boundes (Bounds, etc.,) and (2) Hannah Allison. My husband's line ig through Nellie Boundes, whose daughter, Rhoda Cole, - born Wythe Co., Va., 1770, married Joseph Stephens Sr. in 1790. I can't see a connection with your and our William Howards. There may be one back of the two, especially since your and our ‘Howards were in the same counties in‘N.C. I am enclosing some sheets of information sent to me which I thought you might like to see. The Bryans are pretty hard to straighten out. : He : I appreciate so much your kindness in sending me what you have. I have been thinking about the sivbllarity of the names in your Howards and ours. §0 I made a study of the names of -your Howards ‘and my husband's gr-gr= -grandfather's children's names. He named his: * George, Rachel, Selip( Sarah) ,Cornelius, Mary( Polly) ,Benjamin Jr.,Rebec- @a, and Nancy. I feel even more sure yours and Glyde s are all descendants of Gornelius Howard, the most prominent soh of Matthew I. I think I have solved the origin of the name Christopher. “hile going through some bound ¢opies of DA® magazines at the library inspecting the genealogical sections of each carefully I found these: Vol. .63, page 37/- John Howard's will, Baltimore -.0., Md. , 7-3-1738, on record in Annapolis, sons:Francis, Cormglius, and Edward; daughters: Sarah “ist, Mary Gist and Violetta Gee al In Vol. 65, p» 720 1 found this wonderful fs ' ‘lustrated article om the Gist family and home in Md, Pictured are Gen. ‘ Mordecai Gist, an exterior view of his lovely stone mansion, and an in- terior view. I hope you have not fergotten who I am. We exchanged some letters last year on the Howard and other families of early Rowan. I have just hud a letter from Mrs. W. C. Taylor of Salisbury. She copied for me some material-you. had sent her quite a long time-ago. I quete from you:" He (Morgan. Bryan) was granted 347 acres next to Philip, Howard on River bank near Shallow Ford 1752", Does that meam that in 1752 when Morgan bryan got his grant that. Philip Howard was already living there? Is there a grant or a deed to Philip Howard for land there in or before 1752-3? I wonder” if 1 have missed something. I have a-way ### of doing that. I have not worked on the Howards in Anson County but at one time. 1 did make a quick survey of the grantee index fot Howards and the earliest I noticed was a James Howard 1784. Of course, maybe there was a grant that was not recorded. . ete . And in Rowan County records the earliest fhilip Howard land transactions I have found was *% am ; 7-23-1762+-Philip Howard, Jr.,° from James @ryan, both of Rowan, north bamk of Yadkin, William Styan corner--1694 acres--part of grant to Morgan Bryan 1753. ’ I have always been inclined to think that this Philip, Jr., is the Philip Howard! ( no longer Jr. of course) 1727-1809 whose tombstone you-found in the cemetery nedr Shallowford. You will remember you told us about it. But if there was a Philip Howard there in that immediate area as early as 1752 or earlier, perhaps 1 had better do some re-thinking. : It occurs to me too that perhaps IL am mis-interpreting that _ sentance in your letter to Mrss Taylor.uf course, if there is a document reading “adjoingng thilip Howard" or words to that effect there is nothing that can-be misinterpreted. . : | Can you help me out on this? Lt suddenly becomes rather impéptant, to know if there was a thilip Howard at the. "Shallowford of the Yadkin" as early as 1752 or earlier. Could be and I could have missed it, - : : ' Hope that you and Mrs. Swann are keeping well. With winter about over that should not be so hard now.
