Aug. 10, 1962 Mr, T.%.owann Statesville, N.C. Dear Mr. Swann; Since I have not had any communication with you lately, except through mp daughter, Eva, I thought I would drop you a few lines, to thank you for all the good material, and data you have sent us, We really appreciate all you have done, and hope some day we may be able to repay you, I have come across mmm some material that I thought perhaps you might be interested in, and maybe you have something on this matter. The material | will bring out, is taken from a Quarterly Magazine, I receive from washinzton, D.C., which is called "THe KZNTUCKY GENEALOGIST", and I have membership in this Society, The material has to do with my Great Unele, Henry Hiram Gaither, (bro, of my Grand-father,Wiley Gaither). Henry Hiram was born in N.C. 1367 ?, Married in Mercer County, Ky, in 1329, and lived in Grayson Co, Ky, 1330, He was listed in the 1830 Census, as being born 1800 - 1310, Wife also listeds We have records where he moved to Putnam Co,, Ind, in 1330, and first child | was born Jan, 1331. He married a liza Denny, and I am pretty sure I found her father was Alexander Denny, and lived in Mercer Co., Ky. The afore mentioned items were used to bring out the reason I am sending you the material from the Ky, Genealogist. Below is the material I am interested in getting to you: ie, (As it is printed in the Quarterly.) records of Garrard County, Ky. wills. ; \ Page 13, Matthew Cowden of Kentucky and Madi son: County beins weak in memory (sic) out of sound sposing memory, To Step-father, Joshua Nichols twelve pounds Kentucky currer y and shoe buckles to pay my funeral expenses, ,and my mother the silk handkerchief, and also to my orothers John and William Cowden all my land in Carolina it oe to be divided share and share alike with their paying to my two sisters, Slizabeth and Martha. Cowden each one of them twenty-five pounds Carolina Currency, to be paid in gold or r silver, also sive my brother, John one striped and one shirt and the rest of cléthes to Brother William, If any personal property found, I vive it to my two brothers, to be divided share and share alike, 1 give my oridle to my sister Slizabeth, txecutors: Hugh Andrew, Brother John Cowden, my sole executors, Sp a Will dated 4 March 1793. — MATTHEW COwWDiN. I hereby certify that Abner Sharpe, “squire, is clerk of said County, and that credit is due to his certificates as such, Certified this 21 day of May, 1799. D. Cardwell, Ch man, 4 ca SHHEHHEESHAR aH REESHaEAHe I do not know if this would be of any interest to you or not, but when I read it, I could not help from thinking of you, Now, the thought that has occured to me, is this, Could the Denny Family be from Iredell County also ? And could they have been neighbors, or friends of the Gaithers ? Since Uncle Henry Hiram married a Denny girl, I wonder if some of the Dennys came to Ky, at the same time my Family came, Or perhaps they were friends, and the Gaithers came to Ky. after the Dennys, and went to them when they first got in Ky, I may be off the track, out I cannot Keep from thinking there was some comnection between the two Fanilies while in North Carolina, - So if you know anything of these Families, I would like very much to Know more, myself, Again, 1 want to thank you for all the nice things you have done for will close for this time; Sincerely; sf ( Uhriycl | be Floyd 2. It stéll is a nice quiet little town, the homes tho old are page 2 Creamer to Swann still lovely» in good repair and white paint, and nearly ever home has nice gardens. It seems in this quist place our old world just could not have so many troubies, as we know today. This part of Missouri mst have been plenty rugged whem Archie, o#iriends and family settled there. Some 20 years later David built his sieninn about 2 miled from his father, in between a ¢reek and abranch. On the high sinh wel said to have been an indian burial ground. I remember it as a field, where we children some times picked up indian arrows etc.. we sold some of them along with nuts we some tines sold for our own money. It really did not take mone for children as it does for my grand children today. ‘They are of middle class and of a working family too, and this id good. Swann ctatesville, North Carolina Dear Mr. Swann: I appreciate your sending me the material on deaths of Mecklenburg County, N.C, Kobin- sons John and Ezekiel in 1826, As I wrote earlier, our discovery of the Robisons is So new that I'm just now getting started on research, and I am grateful for your help, oe vomewhere -amiI don't recall when either- I have seen a reference to "The Rising Sun" group but, never dreaming of a possible comection, I didn't pay. too much attention, The possibility that Thomas Swann was a member of this group is certainly worth inves- tigating. Someone Wwas been accepted into the DAR on the basis of Thomas Swann's Rev- olutionary War service and I assume this is "my" Thomas since his wife|is listed as Catharina « I now have proof she was a McConnaughey, but perhaps this fact was not known at the time of the DAR's approval of the papers, My aunt has asked for & copy of these papers since she is a member. | also, and we're hoping there may be ad- iitional information on Thomas, York County, Pa, is adjacent. to Baltimore, Hartford and Carroll Counties, Md, so perhaps the "Rising Sun" affiliation may prove to be cor- rect, I'm sorry that I don't have any data on children and descendants of Isaac Swannts bro- thers and sisters yet. But if I ever find such information, you can be sure I'll pass alone the information to you, I, too, had heard about a Thoms Swann connection with the University of Mississippi but have not found any reference to him in the official history of-the iniversity, I am acquainted with the University Historian and will ask him if there are any records which mention Thomas owamn,.
