Chambers from a Mrs. Chamoerg of Johnson City, Tenn., througn . her gon in Atlanta. Notning in tne poak ties her husband's Chanm- vers line to anybody in tne boon, ana tne same is almost true of my Henry Chambers line, tue exception veing tne two suots (four pages) I am sending to you. The only reason I send the pages to you is t..at p. 132 shows t..e Artnur Chambers children. You nave asked me more tnan once if I knew anytning of his cuildren ana I dian't.. I d@ not know whether you uad a persona. interest , or were just ask@$mg in behalf of someone else. The Henry A. Cham ~ ergs wno contributed these notes says on p.- 130, "I am getting , old. . .« -"” and since tne book was printed in 1925, I doubt tnat he is still living. You will note that ne gives dates:for the Cuildren of the elder Henry and (as we know) Jane Futney. The dates of Henry and Jennet we nave from tue Fourtnh.Creek -urying » Ground in Statesville(@17o62 and 17s1). Son Henry, b. 1750, died on "Farmville" place in 1817; Arthur, b. 1753, died in Iredell Ca., in 1519, AND SO ON. I want to make out a family cnaft, placing in pogition.on it and suppiying such dates as I have, of Henry ana Jennet and tneir descendants. But the@e are stiil several puzziing probiems. If | tnis book is rignt, tue Henry(b.. 1750) died on Farmville place 1B17. Yet I have a photocopy of nis will dated Sept. 3, 1802, and nawing brothers and sisters as named in his fatne:'s will, 1781 (proved 1796). I have no proving date of tne 1002 will, but he names "friend Robert Steele" as guardian "for my two sons Joseph and Maxwell." Maybe he thought he was going to die and then lived on till 1817. The more I write tue moré I seem to get nowhere. I hope the Xeroxed pages enclosed wiil be of interest to you.. This book centers: its interest in Indiana and starts rather vaguely witn four brotners wid came into Pennsylvania. The rela- tionship is conjectural, and tne eariy Henry is conjectured to be a cousin of tnese four but is ruled out as a fifth brotner because his birtn year is tne same as one of tue orothers\ ana would appar- entiy spoli t..e magic number of four by making FIVE protners. That, seems ta ve a specimen oi tne logic used in figuring most of the relationsuips.. This "Uncle Henry" was assumed to have come to North Carolina with four nephews, wuo came. to different parts of the state, and from his vast knowledye of land values advised them about whee to go. The part I send to you, by Henry A. Chambers of Chattanooga, is avout tne most definite part of the book, and tnis part, as you can see,’is disappointingly limited, tnougn‘it does add a lit‘le to our knowledge of tne Iredell folk. I call to your attention tuat Three of Henry and Jennet's sams nawed a son Maxwell, though ali of vthem were too young to be tne Maxwell Cham— - bers whose will (1809) I have record of witn ten or eleven cuildren. I do not tink I can go much further, short of research in Pennsylmania,. I am still intricued with the possibility an earlier will of Henry Chambers in Cumberland County, from which Rowan was taken, may turn out to be an earlier will of the same Henry Chambers, I conied it but amwiot sure of the sigmature, If T can get to Raleigh on this trip, with this will inrmy possession, I can compare the original signatures of the " two wills, The early wil: shows a daughter Mary, but she may have died, As I think I wrote jou before, he refers to "my friend Maxwell Chambers of Salisbury,"and to his father's will in Pennsylvania, I have a relative in Nebraska descended from my great-great uncle Nathaniel Adams and his wife Mary Stedl wno was born in South Carolina, I want to find out if any of the Steels from Pa, or Ny Car, went to S. Car, This is not a very strong interest, but I would like to do her a favor, since she got me a copy of a page from a Bible which contained names and birthdates of all the children of my ereatecreat grandfather William Adams, from Va., Tenn.,and perhaps S, Car, ee re . / If I can get through Salisbury and Statesville, I want to see a great many graveyards and , if possible, clear up the rélationshins of the Chambers, McHenrys, Steels, liesbits, “eids, et al. Car. 28677 Dear Mr. Swann: I enclose photocopy of a letter I wrote in reply to a Mrse Brayton (whose hame had recently been Mrs, Clouse), who purports to operate a Genealogy Clearing House in Oakland, Calif. This is the easiest way to give you some of the infor- — . mation I have. I also enclose copy of a genealogical sheet on Henry Chambers=Janet Futhey made out afcording to her direc e I add in ink facts included in your letter and not given Kear’ ier letter to me, facts (or clues) that give me something to work one I will add some specific answers to things not in the scope of this page but menti@med in your letter. Mrs. B. , gave on the page she sent me under children only Elizabeth, m . Ninian Steele. All the others I give are mentioned in the will ~ of Henry Chambers Junior (Will, Iredell Go.,. Sept. 3, 1802). - 1 copied from recorés in Raleigh the marriages I give for Henry's brothers and sisters including my direct ancestors Catherine Chambers-George ReidtReed). I have much information about the Reids, who lived in th e Third and Fogrth Creek Area. My George _ was the son of Alexander Reed (as he signs it), Will Rowan, 1775. © I have a certified ow. 6. the family Bible page giving the birth dates of all the r-children, of whom Henry Martin Reid . (married Edie Harrison) is my direct line, Nearly all these children came to Georgia before 1800. I have these Reids traced back through Virginia (where I add several lines: Wallace, Cam- bell, McClung, Harrison, Hood,. etc.) back to Lancaster County, 7 Pa., where I have a shot of a plat of: kand bought be Alexr. Refid. It is an odd circumstance (which you add) that Henry Chambers, Sr., was born in Lancaster Coe, Pa, I think it is significant, | I have a memo of the will of Robert Steele, made Aug. 10, 1781, Rowan Co.(before Iredell was formed)—~1 do not have date probated--that mentions wife Jean and sons Henry, Rohert, Samu and James. His Executors: Henrg Chambers, Jr, and Robert's wife Jean. If my memory is good on the point I also have a note somewhere that Henry resigned in favor of Jean. From the 1780's a Ninian Steele was active in business with Maxwell Chambers in Salisbury. My present theory is that ~ he was a brother of Robert of above will. Also my theory is that Henry Chambers (Jennet) had a brother Maxwell as well as a son Maxwell and that most of the Chamberses not mentioned’in will of Henry Chambers, Jr., were from Mawwell, Sr. At any rate of Henry Chambers, Sr.'s sons, Robert named sons Henry, Joseph, Maxwell (to Ga.e), Maxwell named sons Henry and Maxwell, and Joseph (not mentioned in Henry, Jr.'s will as a brother because*he had al- ready died) named his only son Maxwell(m, 1836 Cathérine Troy). ~ Among the children of Maxwell Chambers, Will 1809, Book G, pe 533, are mentioned (among others) Joesph; Henry, and Maxwell. The point I am arguing is a very close relationship between the Henry and Maxwell Chambers familfes,. cs I have another note, Nearly all these notes are taken Py 2 from the McCubbin notes on microfilm at the State Library at Raleigh, where they ‘are very crudely indexed. I understand that they wer@ made from the originals in the library at Salisbury and that there is also a copy in a library in southern Virginic. Of these things I am not sure. At Raleigh they were very proud of having been permitted to make copy. I found amang them an old-fashioned family tree of the - Knox Family, from which I got my information that Margaret Knox married James Chambers, with a Marginal note that he was son of Henry Chambers born in Pac, with date of birth given (and death year). fe i later wrote’ to Mrse Margaret Prive to ask for a print of that "tree" but she said they never allowed copies except for nptes made by. 7am people who came there. I did go by later and copied the "tree" as completely as I could. If you are interested I could make -_ a Xerox copy for 6¢ of my — COPY. serve eaee in The ournal of N. Car. Genealogy, De 9 March 1962, that the ~~ State Library had accessioned TH8 Knox Fantly ee « John lnoxt of Rowan Co., Ne C., by Hattie S. Goodman, 1905. I suppose they would have that in the library at Salisbury and perhaps in Statesville. At least the McCubbins inearly always cited the pecord book by volume and page. Through their reference I was able to send.and get a phogocopy of the Henry Chambers will (1502). | “© From their notes I quote again: "Maxwell Chambers & ! John Braley are securities for Mrs. Elizabeth Steele when she gets a license to keep an ordinary on Aug. 4, 1774.(She was the widow of William Steele buried at Thyatira--also of Robert — >. Gillespie buried close bye) He and Matthew Troy were coexecutors for the estate of William Steele with the widow, on May by. 1774," At the time I took this note I did/not know that I had any family relationship with the Steeles. It was Maxwell Chambers I was then interested in. I even thought he was my ancestor, Since established as Henry. I do not remember whether there fol-= lowed an abstract of the William Steele will or not..Now I wish I had taken it. Someday I may send for a photocopy to\try. to find out whether this William is the father of our Ninian, etc. Another note: “Feb. 5, 1790, Maxwell Chambers & William Nesbett are appointed guardians of Maxwell Chambers, orphan-of Joseph Chambers, who entered into bond with John Tate. . . o# — is apparent now that I was in error on the Gene sheet in assigning a second husband to our Elizabeth Chambers | Steele, wife of Ninian. It was this earlier Elizabeth Steele, "Our" £14 zabeth Ninian Steele I suppose is buried at Statesvilie,. incidentally I did not know that Henry Chambers, Senior, pas buried in Statesville~-along with Janet? incidentally I glso have no record of Henry Chambers’ land purchase as early}as 1752. You write:"Joseph Chambers 1758=1784 married Mary Fulton." Do you have date of marriage? He may be the brother of fienry Chambers, Jr., unmentioned in the will (1802) because he had been long dead. I have record of another Joseph Chambers who married Mary Campbell Sept. 14, 1778. - Referring to page .3 of the enclosed letter to Mrs, Bray~ ton, re ten graves under lecture room of Pres. I ee ssuspect you have seen it. I hope someday to make a copy of it,, One place or another. oe Another quote from McCubbin: The will of David Beard/ made Sept 26, 1785, Book By, pe 51, Rowan Co. speaks of land on Fourth Creek, a graveyard bo be kept up; Arthur Chambers' wi and children Jane$ and Sarah; John Scott's. daughter Mary; ert Chambers and son David; Henry Chambers arid wife; James Chambers; Jennet, Mary & Elizabeth Steel; Jane Steel; John Beatty; Jdne, David &« Thomas Baird & John Ham. The Executors are Arthur 4nd James Chambers, Witness§s: Alexander Wilson, James Wilson, Jr., & Ninion Steel, My wife has several families in that area, dating bac: to the time we are dealing with--or earlier--and I believe she is planning to write (and enclose) something about them. What do you plan to do with the family information you collect--or is it just local history? Do you ‘think of publish= ing any of it? You did not say, though I thoughtfyou inferred, that you are related to the Chambers®Steele axis. My interest is almost entirely family. 1 have a crude and incomplete fan chart, and lineal charts running back as far as I have been able to trace theme They include (on my fathergs side) names like Adams®Pallard, A@a@ms-Reid(Reed), Reid-Harrison, Reid-Chambers, ChamberseFuthy, Harrison-Hood (here we run into several lines in the Valley of Virginia)--so far these have been husband-wife combinations; now Ijust add names at random: McDowell, Wood Campbell, McClung, Herrin(g), Wauchope(Warsop, Wardhop), Wri cht. I am sure I have not remembered half the ones I have in my notes. and charts. To learn of one more--Futhy-<as I have since the first of the year gives me a bi chagge; then to learn where Henry Chambers was born (county) and where buried (Statesville) and where married (Prince Georges Co., Md.) is just frosting On the cakee I think I have a memo somewhere--I do not lay my ens on it at th e moment-=that the Steeles came from Chester Oey ae i was much more pleased to hear from you than from the Genealogical Clearing House, though the good lady did add a name and a date or two, for which I still await the proof. Some of her things sound like info from a tombstone; one might be from a family bible. I like to’ collect pictures of tombstones and Pages from family bibles and pictures. of wills in any of my direct lines.
