Hartness: Some of the boys in Raleish informed me that you are made at me hecanse of the renort of the State's Prison Direc- tors on leasine convict labor to railroads. I regret this very mush. You know how I feel toward you and how I have always felt. It seens to me that it is very foolish for you to feel different- ly toward me because I an doing my plain duty as a Director of the State Prison. (1 don't blame the people of Iredell County for takinz the State's convicts if the State i8 fool enough to allow them to have them, but you know as Well as I do that it 4s pure volitical jobbery, and you have good reasonsto believe, and you could almost make out a case of circumstantial evidence that would convict before a jury of twelve honest, tpen minded men that the case in vour county is nurely a political trade, because the men who have been conductins this work turned on you and “atts and have been fighting you for all they were worth, and vou were not recognized by them until the time came when these men had no pull on the State authorities, and now they are using you in this matter because you have influence and EE You know that I would do anythine on earth that ia rieht and honest, and that I would do some things that were not exactly right for you or VJatts, but I positively an not going to be a party to robhing the State out of $104,700. of convict labor annually, when the State badly needs the funds, I an against this whole proposition of giving the State con- victs away and soine down in the Treasury and takine the people's money to feed, clothe and euard convicts to work on railroads, and take in payment for same stock that is abso- lutely worthless. The whole System is wrong, you know it is wrong, and it is going to die, If we Democrats don't expose this and bust it up, sone other party will, and it will put us out of husiness. In fiphting this rotten system, it has riven me freat pain, be- cause I fear I am hurting the feelins of some of my very best friends, but I am doing it becanse it is my duty, and I am roing to continue to do my duty or resien. I didn’t make application for this job, it doesn't pay anything, I never have wanted it and don't want it now, but as long as I have anything to do with it, I an going to do my duty as I see it, rerardless of eireumstances. Aw He #2. washed their hands of the whole proposition and put it absolutely up to the Governor and the Council of State. This body has wasted $379,975 worth of convict labor up to July Sra, and if they want to continue it, the responsi- bility is on them and not on our Board, but if it is con- nied, tt 18 moine to he one of the things thet is coing to help te;deatroy the Denocratic party in North Carolina, I never Rave done anything to hurt the Democratic narty and I don't propose to hbesin it at this late day. | I sincerely trust you vill understand my pos‘tion and I truly hope that you Will not feel unkindly toward me, because I think you are too big and bwoad minded to look at matters in that kind of @ way. Iredell Court House, Statesville, N.C. Dear Sirs: Have you any resords of Gilbert Gordon who lived in Iredell | County some time prior to,and during, the Revolutionary war? He fought with the American forces, and (our family history states) served on Gen.Washington's staff at that time. We particularly wish to find his war record. Have you any land records that concern him? He had married Mary Mc Kenzie in Scotland and their children were: Julia Elizabeth, Eleanor,Flora,Mary,Thomas,John and one other son. We know that the firgt census of Iredell Co.,N.C. ,1790, lists Gilbert. Gordon, and we would like to know if he and any of the above mentioned family are listed in the second or third census of that county. We kmow that John was born in 1787,and that he lived in Iredell Co., until some time in 18121. A group of Gordons,Mc Currys,lMc Dougals,HMc Donalds, and Johnsons settled in N.C. and later removed to Georgia. If this information cannot be found in the Iredell Co.,Coutrt House,is it possible to find it elsewhere? Have you 4a library,or D.A.R.Vhapter,that misht have some of it? Thanking you for anything you may be able to find for me,I am very respectfully, Mre.Neta M.Banister, Meta W, Bencblie/ 212 Grace St., Greenwood, South Carolina.
