Sunday Schools, Epworth Leagues and Pastoral Instruction of Children, There were present last Sunday, two hundred enrolled members of our Sunday School, and without any special effort being put forth, With the exception of possibly two Sundays, this is the largest number reported present since I have been in Statesville. We have begun this week, the effort to enroll fifty to one hundred in our Home Department. We have not had the Home Department in our school, sinee I have known the school. If we can find some one to take charge of a Cradle Roll Bepartment, our school could add another fifty to its enrollment. The young people in charge of the Epworth League have been giving considerable effort to the work of attempting to get the League on its feet. They have been somewhat disagpointed at the results. They are still working however. I am convinced that the Epworth League for Broad Street congregation is still an experiment, In the past three Sundays, I have baptized six infants, As to any organized pastoral instruction of children, other than through the Sunday School and through the Junior Missionary Society, tal do they show we have none. We held early in the year a church conference that was well attended, and much intercest was manifested in a plan proposed for the inauguration of a policy of frank publicity on the part of the official board, It was decided to hold one of these conferences quarterly, at which a full statement of the financial status of the church should be made, and an opportunity given for a frank discussion of any matter of interest to the congregation, Ques. 35. A Missionary Institute for the Statesville,District was held at our church on January 14-15, and the sessions were well attended by our congregation. The speeches made on that occasion were of a high order of merit and a definite impetus was given to missionary zeal in our congregation as a residuum of this occasion, An every-member canvass for conference collections has been in progress | for the past two weeks, the final results of which, is to be reported to-morrow night. Two hundred and twenty five dollars had been secured when the committee reported last Wednesday niht. On Sunday, January 31, there was organized a Young Ladies’ Missionary Society, thus giving Broad Street the full missionary organization contemplated in the action of the General Conmr'erence,. At the meeting held in the Ladies Parlor on yesterday afternoon, the organization was completed, and ten names were enrolled as members of the new society. C. Supplement A, The General State of the Church, There might be given several indications that the general condition of the church is better than it has been at any time within the past three years, but the most convincing is the fact that the morning congregations are maintained, and more, over the general average of attendance for that time, The Sunday School is larger, it is more regular in its attendance record, the Men's Bible Class is in flourishing condi- tion, has the largest enrollment it has ever had, is growing almost every Sunday, the other classes show an almost equally favorable record and the liberality of the school shews marked growth during the year, Last Sunday, the school raised the largest amount in cash for the Children's Home that has ever been raised fer any regular cause in the history of the school, No unusual means were used in securing this amount, Zhe Epworth League is now a real league, doing real work, and holding the interest of the young people as it has never done since T have known it, It is doing better work than any League that T have had experience in, During the past nine months it has purchased and presented to the congregation, a piano for the Fpworth League Room, that is used in Mid-week Prayer Services, in the Missionary society meetings, and in its own meetings, It will make the last payment on the purchase price, next week, With the begitning of the new conference year, it is to take up the support of a young man, a ministerial student, at Trinity College, It thus follows a worthy precedent set by the Men's Bible Class in the support of Miss Allen at Davenport College, The following have been received by certificate: William Fugene Munday, Agnes Pauline Munday, A, B, &, Gaither, Mrs, M, A, Gaither, Miss Callie Eagle, R, Hart Richey, Mrs, Nina Richey, Fred F, Sloan, Mrs, May Sloan, and Miss Margaret Willis, We have receied Robert F, Armfie#d by profession of faith, We have lost by certificate the following: Miss Sarah C, Reid, Miss Annie Rabe, Buren S, Neill, Mrs, Carrie F, Neill, Alice Flo Neill, Mary Austin Glover, Mary FE Armfield, Sadie Ward, Supplement A, continued, We have lost by order of Church Conference the following, who have been lost sight of for a period of two years or more: Mrs, J, L. Wells, Miss Jeannette Turner, YW, P, Siceloff, James Rose, Mrs, Maggie Roberts, W,. F, Redman, Mrs, R, F, Redman, John Ottinger, R, A, Nash, Mrs, Sallie Nash, Mrs, H, A, Morrison, Mrs, M, L.
