If I have learned anything, it is that God is a good God and His gospel is the Good News. Strout ORIGINAL CHURCH - FRONT VIEW ORIGINAL CHURCH - SIDE VIEW CHURCH HISTORY Berea Baptist Church, a Southern Baptist Church in the South Yadkin Association and located in the Doolie Community on Highway 150 approximately five miles west of Mooresville, North Carolina, was organized on October 7, 1880, by three Presbyterian elders: J. B. Boon, W. J. Tulford, and T. J. Rooke, the latter becoming the first pastor of the church. Three men and eight women comprised the eleven charter members: Benjamin Elkins, Benjamin W. Kerr, Andy J. London, Sarah Elkins, Isabella Elkins, M. Camilla Elkins, Sarah London, Margaret Whitley, Susan Wilson, Emma Donaldson, and Malinda Gudger. A white frame building, replacing the original brush arbor, was built on the approximate site of the present Educational Building. The first parcel of land (two acres) was given by Mr. Joseph Smith Garfield Fisher. Church services were held only once a month in the early days of the church, and not until 1883 did Sunday School literature come into use. The sanctuary appointments in the early church included a wood-burning potbellied stove, a table and chair which sat alongside the altar for the Secretary-Treasurer of the Sunday School, and a pump organ which was financed largely by the door-to-door sale of chickens. Sunday School rooms were improvised by drawing green burlap curtains across the sanctuary. When warm weather necessitated the opening of windows and doors, the men of the church often found it necessary to kill wasps and other insects before the service began. Paper fans supplied by a local funeral home provided a measure of relief from the heat and also served to ward off any late arriving or previously undetected flying intruders. During the 1930’s and 1940’s the members realized the need for expansion. Rather than adding to the existing structure, it was decided to erect a new building instead. THE PRECEDING DOCUMENT HAS BEEN FILMED IN MORE THAN ONE FRAME. Parcels of land adjacent to church-owned property were annexed as necessary, either by purchase or trade, from neighboring property owners. The site for the new church was to be just north of the white frame structure. The contract price (Howard Contractors) was $13,000. In 1951 the congregation moved into their new, debt-free building, members and friends of the church having donated the funds to purchase all the building materials. The following year, 1952, saw the removal of the large trees behind the new building — trees which in years gone by had provided shade for Bible School picnics and Homecoming dinners-on-the ground. Replacing the trees was the Educational Building with its much-needed classroom space adjoining the sanctuary. A baptistry was added to the sanctuary in 1956. In 1958 the background scene, painted by Mr. Walter Keul of Shelby, North Carolina, was presented to the church by Mr. Edgar Collins in memory of his wife, Mrs. Ethel Collins. The next building to be erected was the Fellowship Hall which was built on 1.7 acres of property purchased from Duke Power Company. The pastorium was completed in February, 1955, the first occupants being the family of the Reverend Geter R. Porch. Since its organization, Berea has been served by twenty-one ministers, the Reverend W. J. Wyatt having served two separate terms. Historical records indicate that the yearly salary for a full-time pastor in 1924 was $175. The Women’s Missionary Union was organized in December, 1938, with Mrs. W. L. Christie and Mrs, Ethel Collins serving as President and Secretary-Treasurer, respectively. The eight original members held their meetings on Sunday evenings. Growing out of the W.M.U. were missionary organizations for young women (Young Women’s Auxiliary); girls (Girls Auxiliary); and younger children (Sunbeams). The Y.W.A.’s and G.A.’s are now known as Girls in Action and Acteens. The Sunbeams, organized around 1952 by Mrs. W.L. Christie, are now called Mission Friends. The Brotherhood, an organization for the men of the church, was organized by the Reverend Geter R. Porch. Sponsored by the Brotherhood are the Royal Ambassadors, a missions-oriented organization for boys. Yearly Vacation Bible Schools began in the 1940’s under the direction of the Reverend R. G. Mace and have continued to be held each summer. Berea Baptist Church, now in its 96th year, has a membership of 334. A building committee is currently making plans for another church expansion to accommodate the needs of the growing congregation.
