"In order to obtain regional approval for the project,
it was necessary to agree to a 17 -bed reduction from 121 to
104 beds due to the fact that the regional planning agency
felt that Iredell County is an overbedded county by a total
of 35 beds.
"Now two of the existing nursing units are housed in the
newer construction on the second floor of the north section
of the building which was built in 1971, in the 1971 additions
to the center section.
"Three older of our total five nursing units are housed
in the buildings constructed in 1930 and in 1953. Most of the
patient rooms in the 1930 wing are substandard in size, both
width and depth, and no toilet facilities. Thirty-two of the
rooms in this wing have no toilets and those which have toilets,
only nine have tub or shower. Overcoming these problems will
require approximately 42% more space than is now available.
The Hamilton Associates study concluded that the extent of
deficiencies and the obsolescence of patient rooms in the 1930
section is so great that it would be practically impossible
to modernize these patient care facilities in their present
location and therefore recommended that they should be replaced.
"A description of some of our solutions, to the chart, it
is proposed that the hospital complete what is currently a
shelled -in third floor of the 1971 addition to replace a total
of 29 beds, and construct an additional fourth floor to the
wing, which would replace another 23 beds, for a total of
52 replacement beds.
