Request from the Sheriffs Department to Add Five Additional Vehicles to
the Law Enforcement Fleet: Chief Deputy Rick Dowdle said the sheriff was
requesting to retain five vehicles that would soon be replaced with newer models. He
said the older vehicles would be used by part-time reserve officers, and they were
needed due to the regular fleet sometimes being reduced through accidents or repairs.
Commissioner Williams asked if the department would ask for new vehicles to replace
the five older models when it came time to remove them from the fleet.
Dowdle said that in the past, the department had used support vehicles when the
fleet had been reduced.
Commissioner Johnson asked if the sheriffs department had enough funds to
operate the older models in the FY 05-06 budget.
Dowdle said yes.
Williams asked if the insurance would increase.
Mashburn said yes.
Blumenstein said the county's insurance was handled through the North
Carolina Association of County Commissioners, and the costs would not be calculated
until it was time for annual renewal (February).
ADJOURNMENT: Vice Chairman Williams adjourned the briefing at 6:25
