Pope, County Attorney Alice Fortner, Clerk to the Board Susan Blumenstein, Director of Financeaandd Administrative William Allison, Planner CALL TO ORDER: Chairman Haire INVOCATION: The Reverend Don Hawkins, Pastor First Assembly of God Statesville, NC ADJUSTNgNT OB THE AGENDA: At the request of the county manager, the board consented to adjust the agenda. SPECIAL RESOLUTION MOTION from Commissioner Stewart to adopt the following special resolution: WHEREAS, nearly 14 million Americans, 400,000 North Carolinians, and between 2,815 and 4,130 residents of Iredell County have diabetes, an incurable disease that impairs the body's ability to convert sugar into energy; and WHEREAS, diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death by disease in the United States; and WHEREAS, in this year alone, more than 650,000 Americans will contract the disease and 160,000 will die from it, including a disproportionate number of Hispanic Americans, African Americans, and Native Americans; and WHEREAS, people with diabetes have a high risk of developing serious complications, such as blindness, kidney disease, heart attack and stroke; and WHEREAS, an increase in community awareness of diabetes, new research findings, and the American Diabetes Association, may stimulate public action in increasing research toward a cure, and inspire people to take better control of their disease and live a healthier life; let it therefore be RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners of Iredell County do hereby proclaim the month of November 1994 to be National Diabetes Hoath in Iredell County and asks that every citizen participate in efforts that support research to end diabetes and improve the lives of all those who have this disease.
