CORRECTION ADVISING OF THE UNSUITABILITY OF THE FORMER PRISON
SITE FOR THE NEW CLOSE -SECURITY PRISON TO BE LOCATED IN WESTERN
NORTH CAROLINA: Mr. Mashburn said a letter had been received indicating the former prison
site located on Tumersburg Road would not be suitable for the new close -security facility. He
asked if the commissioners wanted any comments to be made to the state office about the decision.
The commissioners did not request follow-up.
Commissioner Johnson did inquire as to the types of inmates being transported to the
furniture school at the site. He said a citizen had contacted him about a recent escape.
Commissioner Stewart said she had received a similar inquiry. She suggested that the
manager talk with Representative Frank Mitchell about the types of inmates being transported into
the county. Mrs. Stewart said Mr. Mitchell had talked to a prison official, and he had information
about the matter.
