of increasing the sales tax by one cent; however, half of the one cent would go to the state.
Hlumenstein was asked how much money this would generate. She said a half cent sales
tax would generate about $5 million, based on population. She said an additional penny on the
tax rate would generate $1 million.
Chairman Tice said the board could take a straw vote on the budget with an
understanding that at the next regular meeting (June 19, 2001), the option of making changes
would be available.
Straw vote:OTIO by Commissioner Williams to accept the budget as presented with
the changes already agreed upon during the budget work sessions (Centralina COG, Shepherds
VFD, County -Wide Service District/debt retirement, and increased fees for road signs/nonowner
petitions).
VOTING: Ayes — 5; Nays — 0.
CLOSED SESSION: iWQTIOby Chairman Tice to enter into closed session at 9:10
P.m., for the purpose of discussing a personnel matter (G.S. 143-318.11 (a) 6) and a property
acquisition item (G.S. 143-318.11 (a) 5).
VOTING: Ayes — 5; Nays — 0.

ADJOURNMENT: OTIO by Chairman Tice to adjourn the meeting at 9:50 p.m.
