Bowles asked how many signs would be considered in violation of the 1997 ordinance. Smith said hundreds. He said if the real estate signs were included, there would be thousands. Commissioner Bowles said he had concerns for the business owners located off the main roads. He said there should be some mechanism for the businesses to place a sign on the main road in order to compete in the open market. Commissioner Williams said he also had concerns for the auto repair business owners. Commissioner Ray said more information was needed on the proposed revisions, especially the impact they would have on business owners. Commissioner Williams said he was in favor of linking the enforcement to other types of zoning, as well as the square footage. CommissionerRay said she understood there were other nonconforming signs in the county that had not been removed. said that in many cases, the signs may have been in place Smith said this was correct. He before the zoning was adopted, but it was difficult for the business owners to present any factual evidence showing when they were erected. Mr. Williams asked how the proposed ordinance would be enforced. Smith said it would have to be on a call -by -call basis. He said the planning department did not have anyone that was 100% dedicated to code enforcement. Mr. Smith said much of the enforcement would be through the permitting process. Johnson asked if the other board members wanted to regulate the ordinance by the total number of square footage (signage) at an intersection. Williams said this would be his suggestion. Smith said there might be three, three-foot signs on one post to accommodate more businesses. Bowles said joint participation on the signage would help control the clutter. Chairman Tice said the board would need to consider Mr. Crosby's request prior to the next board meeting (March 20). MOTION by Chairman Tice to postpone a decision on the sign ordinance revisions until the March 20, 2001 meeting. VOTING: Ayes - 5; Nays - 0.
